ANKA, Zamfara State — Residents of Anka Local Government Area staged a protest this morning to draw attention to the worsening security situation along the Mayanchi–Anka–Bukkuyum–Gummi road, a corridor that has become a hotspot for armed attacks, kidnappings, and banditry. The demonstrators, composed of men, women, and youths from surrounding communities, expressed frustration over near-daily assaults that have disrupted travel, trade, and farming activities, leaving local populations living in fear.

The protest began early in the town center and proceeded along strategic points of the road, with participants holding placards and chanting for immediate government intervention. Community members recounted recent attacks in which travelers, traders, and commuters were ambushed, some losing their lives while others were abducted. These attacks, residents said, have made essential activities like transporting goods, attending school, and accessing medical facilities increasingly perilous.

Anka and its surrounding areas have been significantly affected by the broader banditry crisis in Zamfara State. Armed groups, exploiting the remoteness and limited security presence, have operated with relative impunity for years, carrying out kidnappings, killings, cattle rustling, and attacks on isolated villages. Many residents have been displaced, abandoning homes and farms for safer areas, further straining local economies and social cohesion.

During the demonstration, community leaders and elders called on state and federal authorities to deploy more security personnel and establish intelligence-led patrols along the vulnerable highway. Protesters emphasized that sporadic military operations had not provided lasting solutions and stressed the need for sustained, coordinated efforts to secure the road and nearby communities.

The protest also highlighted deepening frustration with local and national political leadership. Residents accused officials of failing to translate promises of security into tangible action, warning that continued inaction could lead to further disruption, loss of life, and potential mass displacement. Some demonstrators temporarily blocked portions of the highway to underscore the severity of the situation and ensure their demands were heard.

Analysts observing the events note that protests like today’s reflect the growing impatience of communities living under constant threat from criminal gangs in northwest Nigeria. While military and police operations have occasionally rescued hostages and repelled attacks, the overall threat remains acute, affecting daily life and economic activities across Anka and neighboring areas.

Officials had not issued a formal statement regarding the protest by midday, but residents vowed to continue their advocacy until meaningful measures were implemented. The demonstration represents both a plea and a warning: that without decisive and sustained government action, insecurity along the Mayanchi–Anka–Bukkuyum–Gummi road will continue to endanger lives, restrict economic activity, and disrupt the livelihoods of communities in Zamfara State.
