The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three suspected armed robbers in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, recovering a cache of weapons including pump-action guns, pistols, and ammunition during an intelligence-led operation. The arrests come as part of ongoing efforts by the police to curb violent crime and restore public confidence in the state.

Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad carried out the operation on March 21, 2026, following credible intelligence about a criminal gang operating in the area. The suspects were apprehended after coordinated investigations and search efforts that led officers to a hideout containing weapons and other criminal paraphernalia.

During the operation, authorities recovered two pump-action guns, two locally made pistols, five rounds of 9mm ammunition, seven live cartridges, body armour, and a beret linked to a cult group, suggesting the suspects’ involvement in organised armed robberies and violent crimes in the community.

The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the arrests demonstrate the command’s commitment to proactive policing and intelligence-led operations aimed at safeguarding lives and property. Investigations are ongoing, with police working to apprehend other fleeing members of the alleged gang.

Ogidi and neighbouring communities have faced periodic spikes in violent crime, prompting the police to enhance patrols, raids, and community policing initiatives. Previous operations in the area have targeted armed robbery rings and cult-linked criminal networks, which have disrupted local security and threatened residents’ safety.

Community leaders welcomed the arrests, expressing relief that suspects are being brought to justice. Residents noted that armed gangs had heightened fear along transport routes and in residential areas, and they urged sustained police presence and cooperation to prevent further criminal activity.

Security analysts have observed that the use of locally made firearms and cult-related items is consistent with patterns in southeastern Nigeria, where criminal groups exploit rural gaps and transport corridors to carry out violent offences. Experts emphasize that disrupting these networks requires ongoing intelligence, community engagement, and targeted enforcement.

SP Ikenga encouraged the public to continue cooperating with the police by providing credible information that can aid in dismantling criminal networks. He reiterated the command’s commitment to public safety and called for community support in ongoing crime prevention efforts.

The suspects are expected to face legal proceedings once investigations conclude, and authorities have pledged to update the public on developments as the cases progress.
