Adeleye Falade has officially assumed office as the managing director and chief executive officer of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) on April 1, 2026, marking a new chapter in the company’s leadership and strategic direction. His appointment follows a planned transition after the departure of his predecessor, Philip Mshelbila, who concluded his tenure at the end of December 2025 and has since taken up the position of secretary-general of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar.

Falade brings nearly three decades of global experience across the liquefied natural gas and petroleum value chain. Before returning to NLNG, he served as managing director and chief executive officer of Brunei LNG, where he led operations, strategy, and performance at one of the world’s established LNG producers. He also held senior leadership roles within the Shell Group, including positions in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, as well as prior roles within NLNG itself.

His career with NLNG includes service as operations manager and general manager of production, where he oversaw plant reliability, performance, and operational safety across the company’s facilities on Bonny Island. This experience provided him with deep insight into NLNG’s operations and prepared him for leadership at the company’s highest level.

Falade’s academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Ibadan and an MBA from Henley Business School, University of Reading, United Kingdom. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, a registered member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

The leadership change occurs at a pivotal moment as NLNG approaches the completion of the Train 7 expansion project, which is expected to significantly increase production capacity and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global LNG market. The company has also secured long-term gas supply agreements with third-party suppliers to ensure steady feedstock for its plants, supporting continued growth and operational sustainability.

Falade’s appointment also reinforces NLNG’s commitment to indigenous leadership and capacity development. With a fully Nigerian management team, the company demonstrates confidence in local expertise while maintaining its international competitiveness. Stakeholders, including shareholders, government representatives, and industry partners, have expressed support for the transition, highlighting the importance of leadership continuity in maximizing Nigeria’s gas resources.

Industry analysts note that stable and experienced leadership is essential for navigating challenges such as fluctuating global gas demand, energy transition pressures, and operational optimization. Falade’s combined international and local experience positions him to guide NLNG through growth, sustainability initiatives, and strategic partnerships while maintaining operational excellence.

Looking ahead, the company under Falade’s leadership is expected to prioritize operational performance, strategic expansion, and contribution to Nigeria’s role in the global energy market. His tenure signals both continuity and a forward-looking approach to sustaining NLNG’s legacy, enhancing domestic capacity, and leveraging opportunities in the evolving energy landscape.
