LAGOS BACKS LONDON-TO-LAGOS MOTORBIKE CAMPAIGN TO BOOST POLIO ERADICATION EFFORTS

The Lagos State Government has thrown its weight behind an ambitious international awareness and fundraising campaign aimed at eliminating polio, as a Nigerian Rotarian prepares to embark on a transcontinental motorbike journey from the United Kingdom to Nigeria under the banner of the “End Polio Now” initiative.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the government’s support during a courtesy visit by the campaign initiator, Olatunji Emmanuel Okedeyi, alongside the project director, Tolu Daramola. The meeting underscored the state’s commitment to public health advocacy and its recognition of innovative approaches to tackling infectious diseases through global partnerships and community engagement.

Speaking at the meeting, Omotoso described polio as a dangerous and highly debilitating disease that demands sustained and collective action from governments, organisations and individuals. He praised the initiative as both “interesting and laudable,” noting that it has the potential to generate awareness across multiple countries while also mobilising resources for ongoing eradication programmes. He commended the courage and determination of the campaigner, stating that such efforts reflect the kind of civic responsibility required to address global health challenges.

The campaign, spearheaded by Okedeyi, is designed not only to raise awareness but also to generate significant funding to support the global eradication of polio. According to the Rotarian, the journey aims to mobilise at least £100,000 in donations, which will be channelled into programmes focused on vaccination, surveillance and healthcare interventions targeting the disease. The initiative aligns with broader international efforts led by organisations such as Rotary International, which has long been at the forefront of polio eradication campaigns worldwide.

Providing details of the journey, Okedeyi explained that the road trip will begin in Kent, in the United Kingdom, and traverse multiple countries across Europe and West Africa before reaching Nigeria. The route includes France, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Guinea, Senegal, Ghana, Togo and Benin Republic, making it a demanding cross-continental expedition that combines advocacy with direct engagement. During the trip, the campaigner plans to visit Rotary Clubs in each country, leveraging the organisation’s extensive network to raise funds and spread awareness about the need to eradicate polio globally.

Public health experts have consistently emphasised that awareness campaigns remain a critical component of disease eradication, particularly in regions where misinformation, limited access to healthcare and logistical challenges can hinder vaccination efforts. Initiatives such as the London-to-Lagos ride are seen as valuable tools for drawing attention to ongoing efforts while encouraging broader participation from communities, stakeholders and donors.

Upon arrival in Nigeria, the campaign will transition into a series of community-focused activities aimed at delivering direct healthcare services. Okedeyi, who is also the President-elect of the Rotary Club of Mushin, is expected to mark his investiture with a large-scale medical outreach programme scheduled for July 17, 2026, in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State. The outreach will involve more than 50 volunteers and provide a range of services including optical care, dental treatment and physiotherapy to members of the public.

Organisers say the outreach programme will be supported by medical supplies valued at approximately $100,000, donated by partners and supporters of the initiative. The intervention is intended to complement broader public health efforts by addressing immediate healthcare needs while reinforcing the importance of preventive care and community-based medical services.

Nigeria has made significant progress in its fight against polio in recent years, achieving a major milestone when it was declared free of wild poliovirus by the World Health Organization in 2020. However, health authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance, particularly in addressing vaccine-derived strains and maintaining high immunisation coverage to prevent any resurgence of the disease. Campaigns like “End Polio Now” are therefore considered essential in sustaining momentum and ensuring that gains made over the years are not reversed.

The Lagos State Government’s endorsement of the initiative reflects a broader recognition of the role subnational governments can play in supporting global health campaigns. By aligning with grassroots efforts and international organisations, state authorities can help amplify messaging, mobilise resources and encourage public participation in critical health programmes.

Observers note that the London-to-Lagos ride also symbolises the interconnected nature of global health challenges, illustrating how actions taken in one part of the world can contribute to outcomes elsewhere. The cross-border nature of the campaign highlights the importance of collaboration among nations, particularly in addressing diseases that do not respect geographical boundaries.

As preparations for the journey continue, stakeholders have expressed optimism that the campaign will not only achieve its fundraising target but also inspire similar initiatives aimed at tackling other public health issues. The combination of advocacy, fundraising and direct community intervention positions the project as a multifaceted approach to health promotion.

For many supporters, the campaign represents more than just a motorbike journey; it is a call to action for individuals and institutions to play their part in ending a disease that has caused suffering for generations. With backing from the Lagos State Government and the support of international partners, the initiative is expected to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing global push to consign polio to history.
