The Borno State Police Command has taken proactive steps in commemorating the 2026 National Police Day, hosting a broad community engagement and sensitization programme in Maiduguri focused on the dangers of electoral violence and the importance of peace, rule of law, and civic responsibility ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

The event, held at the Lamisula Police Divisional Headquarters, brought together senior officers of the command including the Commissioner of Police, his management team, divisional officers, and other key operatives. Representatives from community institutions also attended, highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative.

In a heartfelt address, the Commissioner of Police emphasised the critical need for citizens to shun all forms of electoral violence, including ballot snatching, thuggery, and intimidation, which undermine democratic processes and weaken public trust in the ballot box. He urged residents to uphold the rule of law and respect human rights while encouraging community participation in peaceful elections.

The Police Command’s initiative aligns with a broader national focus for the 2026 National Police Day events. Commands across the country are holding community-oriented activities aimed at reinforcing police-public partnerships as a foundation for peaceful and secure societies. Other police commands have organised medical outreaches, sanitation drives, walkathons, and public sensitisation campaigns to build trust and encourage cooperation between law enforcement and citizens. These activities reflect a national strategy to enhance the role of the Nigeria Police Force in community engagement and public reassurance.

The Borno event also saw active participation from local stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, district heads, and representatives of local councils. Their presence underscored the shared responsibility between security authorities and community actors to promote peaceful coexistence and discourage election-related conflict.

During closing remarks, community leaders expressed appreciation for the police’s proactive effort, highlighting the importance of inclusive dialogue in preventing violence and building trust. They pledged continued cooperation with law enforcement in efforts that support peace, security, and democratic values within their communities.

The Borno State Police reiterated its commitment to ensuring a secure environment before, during, and after electoral processes. Officers urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and to report suspicious activities and possible election offences to the nearest police station. Authorities stressed that citizen cooperation remains crucial in deterring electoral violence and safeguarding the democratic process in the lead-up to the 2027 polls.

The engagement in Maiduguri comes amid ongoing security challenges in the state, which has experienced instability due to insurgency and periodic attacks. Strengthening community ties and bolstering public collaboration with security agencies are seen as pivotal steps toward broader peace and development goals for the region.

As Nigeria prepares for another election year, localised efforts like the Borno Police Command’s awareness engagement serve not only as part of a ceremonial celebration but also as an important preventive measure against electoral violence, reinforcing citizens’ role in safeguarding peace and democratic norms.
