Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have arrested Udoma David Ekeh, a social media user, following his dissemination of false information about the agency and its officers. In December 2025, Ekeh posted on TikTok that operatives from the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC had been kidnapped by bandits while on assignment in Kwara State and that a large ransom was demanded for their release. The EFCC confirmed that these claims were entirely fabricated.

According to EFCC sources, the suspect’s posts misrepresented the Commission’s ongoing efforts to combat internet fraud and other economic crimes, misleading the public and undermining confidence in law enforcement. The arrest was part of the Commission’s broader effort to combat misinformation and safeguard the integrity of its operations.

Further investigations revealed that Ekeh is allegedly involved in a romance scam, using a Facebook account under the alias “Garg Carta” to impersonate a foreign national. This tactic is reportedly part of a scheme to defraud unsuspecting victims through deception and financial manipulation.

The EFCC stated that Ekeh will be charged to court once investigations are complete, with likely counts including dissemination of false information and offences related to cybercrime and online fraud under Nigerian law. The Commission emphasized that spreading unverified or false claims about its operations can disrupt investigations, create public panic, and compromise ongoing law enforcement activities.

Officials highlighted that the arrest underscores the growing need for vigilance against misinformation on social media platforms, especially when it involves official government agencies. They urged the public to verify information before sharing it online and warned that legal consequences exist for spreading false statements that threaten public trust or national security.

The case is expected to proceed to court in the coming weeks, where further details on charges and potential penalties will be clarified. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to combating both economic crime and the spread of false information that undermines public confidence in its work.
