Amid escalating insecurity in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State police have arrested a man impersonating a soldier in the Angwan Rukuba community. The arrest is part of intensified efforts to restore calm following a deadly attack that shook the region and heightened fears among residents.

The suspect was detained on April 1, 2026, after being observed moving around the community in military-style clothing and carrying a Nigerian Military School identity card that appeared to be forged. Security authorities confirmed that the man was acting suspiciously, raising alarms among patrol teams, and he was promptly taken into custody for questioning. Investigations are ongoing to verify the authenticity of his military credentials and determine any links to recent violent incidents in the area.

This arrest occurred in the context of a violent attack on March 29, 2026, in Angwan Rukuba, during which armed assailants attacked residents late at night, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. In response, state authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew across Jos North to prevent further violence and give security forces space to operate.

Authorities noted that impersonating military or police personnel is a serious offense that can undermine public confidence, create confusion, and facilitate criminal activity. They warned that anyone caught impersonating security personnel will face strict legal consequences.

In addition to the alleged fake soldier, several other individuals were detained for exploiting the tense security environment to commit theft and other unlawful acts. Police have increased patrols in and around key locations, including markets, transport hubs, residential areas, and the University of Jos, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

The security situation in Plateau State has attracted national attention, prompting the Inspector-General of Police to deploy additional personnel, including tactical teams and intelligence operatives, to strengthen security and prevent further attacks. Governor Caleb Mutfwang has also condemned the violence, assured residents of justice for the victims, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

Residents have described a climate of fear and disruption, with many adjusting their routines to avoid potential attacks. Universities and community leaders have called for enhanced security around campuses and residential areas to protect students and residents.

The Plateau State Police Command emphasized that the arrest of the suspected fake soldier and other individuals is part of a broader effort to prevent the exploitation of insecurity by criminals. Authorities continue to urge the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious movements and activities, reinforcing the need for community involvement in maintaining peace and security.

Investigations into the identity and motives of the suspect are ongoing, and authorities have pledged to ensure that all legal procedures are followed in bringing those responsible to justice. The situation remains fluid, with continued efforts to stabilize communities and rebuild trust between residents and security agencies.
