The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has led a major operational visit to Plateau State following a deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba community of Nasarawa Gwong in Jos North Local Government Area. The attack, which occurred on March 29, 2026, resulted in multiple civilian casualties and heightened fears of escalating violence across the region. The visit demonstrates intensified security measures and a coordinated response by both federal and state authorities to restore order and protect lives.
Upon arrival in Jos, IGP Disu paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, expressing condolences to families affected by the attack and reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to peace. He subsequently visited Angwan Rukuba to assess the security situation on the ground and engage with community leaders and residents.
The Inspector-General confirmed that an immediate operational response had been activated upon receiving reports of the attack. This response included the deployment of senior police officials, such as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations and the Assistant Inspector-General leading the Police Mobile Force, alongside eight units of the Police Mobile Force, the Special Intervention Squad, and intelligence units. These measures were implemented in coordination with the military and other security agencies to stabilize the area and prevent further loss of life.
IGP Disu emphasised that coordinated security operations and sustained engagement with the Local Government Chairman, community leaders, and youth groups have significantly de-escalated tensions. Security personnel remain strategically deployed, and intelligence-led operations continue to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. He also warned against any form of retaliation or vigilantism by residents, stressing that such actions would undermine ongoing peace efforts.
Governor Mutfwang commended the rapid response of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, and the decisive role of the Police Mobile Force in containing the crisis. He highlighted the need for structural improvements in security management, including the potential establishment of a State Police to enhance operational efficiency. The Governor also advocated for modern policing tools, such as night surveillance drones with infrared capabilities, to strengthen security operations across the state.
The Governor further called on the State Criminal Investigation Department and the State Intelligence Bureau to intensify intelligence-gathering efforts. He pledged continued support for the Nigeria Police through logistics and resources while acknowledging ongoing challenges such as the vast terrain, manpower demands, and distances between armouries, which affect effective security coverage.
IGP Disu assured that he would brief the President and Commander-in-Chief on the security situation as part of ongoing national security coordination. He called on residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, and to provide credible information to security agencies to aid ongoing operations. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the country.
The attack in Angwan Rukuba has disrupted normal life in Plateau State, prompting curfews, school closures, and heightened security measures across Jos and neighbouring communities. Residents and civil society groups have welcomed the reinforced security presence while urging authorities to address the root causes of recurrent violence, including communal tensions, disputes over resources, and socio-economic disparities.
Security analysts note that Plateau State faces a complex mix of challenges that include historical grievances, land disputes, and communal divisions, which have periodically erupted into violent incidents. The ongoing coordinated operations by federal and state security agencies aim not only to respond to immediate threats but also to establish sustainable mechanisms for peace and stability.
As investigations continue, authorities are focused on apprehending perpetrators, restoring order, and ensuring the safety of residents.
