A suspected key operative of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), identified as Simon Chukwumeoru Akpoke, widely known by the alias “Iron,” has been apprehended by Nigerian security forces at his hideout in Ijebu‑Igbo, within the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State. This arrest represents a significant breakthrough in the ongoing nationwide campaign by Nigerian armed forces to dismantle violent separatist and militant networks operating both within the South‑East and beyond.

The capture took place on March 29, 2026, following credible intelligence that identified Akpoke’s location. He had been on the wanted list of the Army’s 82 Division, which has been actively pursuing individuals linked to IPOB/ESN and other designated terrorist groups. Security officials described the operation as intelligence-driven, precise, and conducted without any reported casualties.

Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, said that the arrest was part of a broader military strategy aimed at dismantling leadership structures and operational networks that sustain militant activities. He confirmed that in addition to Akpoke, two women alleged to have provided medical assistance to injured militants were also arrested. One was detained at a checkpoint in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, while the other, identified as Ezinna Anthonia, was arrested in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Investigations indicated that these individuals had been treating wounded fighters at camps in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, supporting the operational resilience of the militant group.

Authorities highlighted that targeting the support networks of militants — including logistics, medical care, and local collaborators — is crucial to undermining their capacity to operate and regroup. Between March 30 and April 2, security forces reported additional arrests of more than twenty suspects involved in terrorism, arms trafficking, drug distribution, and illegal mining. Several civilians kidnapped by criminal elements were also rescued during these coordinated operations.

The IPOB and ESN have been central to Nigeria’s internal security challenges in recent years. IPOB, which was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in 2017, originally advocated for secession and the re-establishment of Biafra in the South‑East. Over time, the group became increasingly militant, with the ESN engaging in repeated clashes with security forces and being implicated in kidnappings, extortion, and disruptions to economic activity in affected communities.

The Nigerian military has repeatedly emphasized that operations extend beyond combat, focusing also on community engagement and intelligence gathering. Authorities called on citizens, traditional leaders, and civil society organisations to provide credible information to aid security efforts, stressing that community cooperation is essential to restoring peace and stability.

While human rights advocates have occasionally expressed concerns about possible overreach in military operations, officials maintain that all actions are carried out lawfully with the protection of lives and property as a priority. The arrest of high-profile militants like Akpoke is considered a tactical win that could weaken the organisational cohesion of armed groups and serve as a deterrent to others.

The wider separatist movement also has transnational dimensions, with leaders abroad engaging in political advocacy and media campaigns. Nonetheless, the Nigerian government continues to focus on dismantling armed networks domestically, restoring security, and ensuring the enforcement of law and order in regions affected by militancy.

The arrest of Akpoke, alongside related arrests of medical collaborators and other suspects, highlights the continued commitment of Nigerian security forces to combating armed extremism and criminal networks while protecting civilian populations and maintaining regional stability.
