Police in Kogi State have launched a full investigation into the murder of a recent university graduate whose body was discovered in an isolated area of Lokoja, raising alarm among his family, friends, and the wider community. The victim, identified as Aminu Lawal, had recently completed his degree and was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) when he disappeared and later met a violent end.

Lawal, a native of the state and a graduate of the University of Maiduguri, left his home in Otokiti Estate in Lokoja on March 18 intending to earn income by ferrying passengers and goods on his commercial luggage tricycle. When he failed to return later that afternoon, his parents launched a frantic search.

The following day, Lawal’s lifeless and severely mutilated body was discovered along a bush path opposite the Central Bank in Zone 8 area of Lokoja. Reports indicated that his head bore marks of blunt force trauma and there were indications that his neck had been violently cut. His tricycle was missing at the scene, suggesting he may have been attacked elsewhere before his body was dumped.

Family members recovered Lawal’s body and laid him to rest according to Islamic rites. Neighbours and friends described him as a hardworking and promising young man who had endured the challenges of completing his education in Maiduguri, only to be killed near his home.

Community members conducted an independent inquiry that led to the identification of a suspect named Garuba, reportedly among the last people to speak with Lawal before his disappearance. Garuba was apprehended on March 25 by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department in Lokoja for further questioning.

Lawal’s family and community members expressed concern over reports suggesting pressure to release the suspect, stressing that the investigation should be conducted transparently and without interference. They have called for the responsible parties to be brought to justice.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing. The state police spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, assured the public that the case would be pursued to a logical conclusion and dismissed claims of undue influence on the probe.

Lawal’s death has sparked broader discussion about the vulnerability of young graduates in Nigeria, particularly those awaiting NYSC deployment. Delays in mobilisation often leave graduates in economic limbo, forcing them into informal work and exposing them to security risks.

Community leaders in Lokoja have appealed to state and national authorities to address the root causes of youth insecurity, including unemployment and gaps in social support systems. They emphasised the need for meaningful opportunities for graduates alongside effective protection against crime and violence.

Lawal’s family continues to mourn but has remained steadfast in their demand for justice, highlighting the need for accountability in cases of senseless violence. Authorities have pledged to clarify the circumstances of his death and ensure those responsible are held accountable, providing some hope for Lawal’s loved ones and the community.
