ABUJA, Nigeria — On World Health Day, observed globally on April 7 to mark the founding of the World Health Organization and highlight pressing health priorities, Dr Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, urged Nigerians to prioritise their health through daily choices and preventive care. She emphasised that building a healthier society requires both government action and the collective commitment of citizens.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dr Soludo stressed that good health results from consistent, intentional daily actions rather than sporadic efforts. She said, “Health is not a one‑off process. It’s a collection of those simple but significant daily actions that define good or bad health. Take care of yourself always. Be mindful of what you consume. Health is irreplaceable.” She described health as the greatest wealth and a vital measure of societal prosperity.

The 2026 World Health Day theme, Together for Health: Stand with Science, focuses on global inequalities in access to quality health services, education, and safe environments. Dr Soludo’s remarks reflected these concerns, calling for shared action by individuals, communities, institutions, and government to address systemic gaps and strengthen collective wellbeing.

Dr Soludo’s advocacy work in Anambra State through her initiative, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, includes weekly workouts, health education drives, and community outreach programmes aimed at raising awareness of preventive health practices and improving public health consciousness. She highlighted that sustainable gains depend on everyday choices regarding nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle habits.

Her message also reinforced preventive strategies to reduce strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system. Nigerians face challenges such as inconsistent primary healthcare delivery, limited access in rural areas, and disparities in service quality. Lifestyle-related conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are rising, highlighting the importance of preventive measures like healthy diets, physical activity, and regular medical checkups.

While acknowledging the critical role of government leadership in providing policies and frameworks for better health services, Dr Soludo emphasised that individuals and communities must actively participate. She called for collective vision, noting that meaningful health improvements require contributions from all sectors.

Her appeal aligns with global health priorities that emphasize reducing barriers preventing millions from accessing quality care. Inequities in preventive services, health education, and safe living conditions persist in Nigeria, particularly in underserved regions. Public health experts argue that improving health outcomes requires not only stronger health systems but also education campaigns and policies that address social determinants such as nutrition, sanitation, and economic stability.

Dr Soludo encouraged Nigerians to make thoughtful decisions about diet, exercise, and self-care, linking these choices directly to preventive health. Poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and limited awareness of preventive measures contribute to a growing burden of chronic diseases. By highlighting mindful living, she reinforced the importance of personal responsibility in achieving national health goals.

She also reminded leaders to design inclusive policies ensuring equitable access to healthcare and urged communities and institutions to support initiatives promoting education, fitness, and preventive care for all age groups. Observers noted that advocacy from influential figures can shape public attitudes and behaviours, especially in a country facing ongoing health system challenges.

Dr Soludo’s message resonated as World Health Day 2026 focused on public health equity and science-led interventions. She stressed that national health is strengthened when individual commitments to self-care are matched by systemic support, creating a healthier, more resilient society.
