In one of its most extensive security operations in recent months, the Nigeria Police Force, through the Lagos State Police Command, has arrested 47 suspects in a series of coordinated raids across the metropolitan region and recovered 14 firearms, multiple vehicles, ammunition and digital devices linked to violent crimes and organised syndicates. The operation, described by police as part of an intensified intelligence‑led strategy, was detailed by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday.

According to the police chief, the arrests and recoveries were made over roughly the past two weeks and span a range of alleged offences, including armed robbery, conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, kidnapping‑related extortion, fraud, and vehicle theft. The command also recovered 14 vehicles believed to be connected to criminal activity.

Commissioner Tijani said the 14 firearms seized comprised 10 locally made guns and four pump‑action rifles, alongside 96 rounds of live 5.2mm ammunition, 29 live cartridges and one expended cartridge. In addition to the arms and ammunition, police recovered two laptops, 29 mobile phones, a flash drive and other incriminating materials now part of ongoing investigations.

One of the high-profile arrests involved an 18-year-old suspect apprehended during a decoy operation in the Ojokoro area. The teenager was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to collect a N20 million ransom following a threat-to-life complaint. Items recovered from him included an HP laptop and a flash drive, which authorities are examining as part of the inquiry. The suspect reportedly confessed to the extortion attempt and linked his activities to prior attempted burglary at a commercial bank.

In another operation, a 23-year-old suspect identified as Sunday Daniel was apprehended at his residence in the Ajegunle area, where a locally made pistol and other evidence were recovered. Daniel reportedly admitted to being a member of a confraternity known for cult-related violence, providing leads that assisted with subsequent arrests of other members still at large.

The command also carried out a targeted raid in Amukoko, leading to the arrest of a suspected armed robber known locally by the alias “Elesin.” Police said that a locally made firearm and cartridges were recovered from his home during the operation.

A significant cluster of arrests occurred at a hotel in Ajao Estate, where 21 suspects were detained. According to the police, the group was celebrating the birthday of an alleged fugitive cultist known by the nickname “Actor.” Items seized included a single-barrel firearm, laptops, mobile phones and materials branded with cult insignia.

The operations also uncovered a syndicate that allegedly impersonated security personnel to attack residential estates and vandalise vehicles. Police said three additional suspects were arrested in connection with this group, and several Lexus vehicles and tools associated with their activities were recovered.

Beyond these specific cases, Commissioner Tijani highlighted the arrest of a 52-year-old man for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. In that incident, police discovered a pistol, 96 rounds of ammunition and three live cartridges hidden in a pillow.

The Lagos State Police Command also reported the arrest of a 62-year-old suspected serial fraudster believed to have defrauded victims to the tune of N130 million. Police said the proceeds of the fraud were used to acquire multiple luxury vehicles, six of which, valued at over N520 million, have been recovered, with efforts ongoing to locate the remaining vehicles and accomplices.

Commissioner Tijani described the operations as a response to the evolving threat of violent crime in Lagos, particularly cultism and armed robbery, which he called persistent challenges undermining public safety. He emphasised that the successes were rooted in deliberate intelligence-gathering, enhanced community engagement, and close collaboration with other security agencies.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property across Lagos State,” the police chief said, warning that perpetrators of crime will face the full weight of the law. He urged residents to continue offering credible information to law enforcement to support ongoing efforts and help build cases that lead to convictions.

Security analysts note that Lagos, as one of Africa’s busiest and most densely populated cities, has long faced a complex security situation shaped by socioeconomic pressures, rapid urbanisation and the presence of organised criminal networks. While previous operations have targeted high-profile robbery syndicates and cult groups, the latest round of arrests and recoveries underscores sustained pressure by the police to dismantle criminal infrastructure and disrupt activities that threaten public order.

The command’s actions come amid renewed calls from civic stakeholders and residents for more proactive measures against crime, including improved response times, better forensic investigation capacity, and stronger community policing frameworks. The police say these elements remain central to their strategy moving forward, with plans to maintain heightened patrols, surveillance and targeted raids.

As the suspects remain in custody, authorities are advancing investigations with the intent to charge them in court in accordance with Nigerian law. The broader impact of the police operations on overall crime rates in Lagos will be monitored by security experts and public safety officials in the coming weeks.
