Lagos, Nigeria — In a development that has drawn widespread public attention and scrutiny of police conduct, the Lagos State Police Command has detained several officers following the circulation of a video showing members of a specialised unit allegedly harassing and extorting youths in a busy area of the city. The police authority said the decision to detain the officers came after complaints supported by visual evidence were lodged by a member of the public.

According to statements from the command’s spokesperson, the officers involved have been identified and brought before the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, for questioning. Their official statements have been obtained, and the commissioner has directed that they be held in detention pending further investigation into the alleged misconduct. The command also confirmed that it has been in contact with the complainant, who is expected to provide a formal statement to assist with the ongoing inquiry.

The video at the centre of the controversy was first shared on social media by a user. It shows operatives of the Anti‑Cultism Squad engaging with young men under the Ojuelegba Underbridge, where they are seen reportedly harassing the youths and confiscating their mobile phones. In the caption accompanying the footage, the author alleged that police impunity was on full display, describing the behaviour captured as abusive and overbearing.

In its official response, the Lagos Police Command stressed that such matters are taken seriously and will be investigated thoroughly. The force reiterated its commitment to accountability and professional standards, emphasising that any officer found to have violated disciplinary codes or legal obligations will face appropriate sanctions in line with established procedures. While the command did not disclose the exact number of officers detained, it made clear that due process would be followed and that the outcome of the investigation will be communicated to the public.

The detention of officers in this case occurs against a backdrop of heightened sensitivity to issues of police conduct in Nigeria, particularly in interactions with young people. Since the nationwide protests in 2020 against police brutality, known as the #EndSARS movement, there has been sustained public scrutiny of law enforcement practices and calls for systemic reform. Although legal and institutional reforms were introduced in the wake of those protests, incidents of alleged harassment, arbitrary stops, and extortion continue to spark outrage when captured in real time and shared on social platforms.

Civil society organisations and youth advocacy groups have long argued for more robust mechanisms to monitor police behaviour and ensure accountability, especially during street operations. They contend that improved internal oversight, transparent investigations, and community engagement are necessary to prevent abuses and rebuild trust between law enforcement and the public, particularly among young Nigerians who disproportionately bear the brunt of such encounters. The handling of this latest incident will be seen as a test of the police command’s resolve to uphold its stated commitment to professional conduct.

Some human rights advocates welcomed the police command’s willingness to investigate and detain officers pending inquiry, but they cautioned that detention alone is not sufficient without transparent outcomes and, where justified, criminal or administrative sanctions. They underscored the importance of timely communication about investigative findings so the public can assess whether justice is being served fairly and consistently.

The episode has also reignited discussions around the use of force and discretionary power during street operations. Law enforcement authorities have previously acknowledged challenges inherent in policing a megacity like Lagos, including the need to balance crime prevention with respect for citizens’ rights. Commissioner Tijani and his leadership team have emphasised in past briefings that officers are expected to act within the rule of law and that misconduct will not be tolerated.

As the investigation continues, the Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to remain calm and allow formal procedures to unfold. The command also encouraged anyone with additional evidence or information related to the incident to come forward through official channels to support the inquiry.

How the outcome of this case will influence broader public perceptions of policing practices in Lagos remains closely watched by rights groups, community leaders, and the general public alike. The degree of transparency and accountability demonstrated in handling this and similar cases could have lasting implications for community-police relations in Africa’s largest city.
