Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced that the Rivers Rainbow Coalition has donated N500 million to the family of late Senator Barinada Mpigi, describing the gesture as a structured intervention aimed at supporting the bereaved family and preserving the lawmaker’s legacy following his death earlier in the year.

Wike disclosed the donation in Port Harcourt during a Night of Tribute held in honour of Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the Senate before his passing on February 19 after a brief illness. The event drew political leaders, associates, and community stakeholders who gathered to reflect on the senator’s life and contributions to governance and development in Rivers State.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister explained that the funds would be used to establish a foundation for the late senator’s family. According to him, the initiative is intended to provide long-term financial stability and ensure that Mpigi’s contributions to public service are not forgotten. He stressed that the support goes beyond ceremonial tributes and is designed to offer practical assistance.

The announcement came amid a period of widespread mourning across Rivers State, where political actors and constituents continue to pay tribute to the late lawmaker. Mpigi was widely regarded as a loyal political associate of Wike and an influential figure in the state’s political structure, with many describing him as a stabilising force during moments of political tension.

Wike praised the late senator, fondly called Barry, as a fearless and dependable ally who remained committed during difficult political periods. He noted that Mpigi’s loyalty was evident when others withdrew support, adding that his character reflected consistency and resilience in times of adversity. According to him, Mpigi was among those who stood firmly during periods of political uncertainty in the state.

He further highlighted the senator’s contributions to development initiatives, particularly in Ogoni land, noting his involvement in advocacy efforts that supported the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni. Wike described him as a bridge between political actors and communities, whose influence extended beyond legislative duties into grassroots development and coordination.

Speakers at the tribute event included political leaders across party lines, community representatives, and elders who described Mpigi as a committed public servant, grassroots mobiliser, and bridge builder. Many noted that his death has created a significant gap in the political landscape of Rivers State, especially within his senatorial district, where he was regarded as a key consensus builder.

Former colleagues and associates also praised his humility, generosity, and dedication to public service. They emphasised that his impact was not limited to politics but extended into community development, mentorship, and support for young leaders. His ability to maintain relationships across political divides was repeatedly highlighted as one of his defining qualities.

The Rivers Rainbow Coalition, which made the financial donation, is described by political observers as a network of allies aligned with key figures in the state’s political environment. The group is often associated with strategic interventions and community support initiatives, particularly during moments of political significance or personal loss within the political class.

At the event, attendees observed a moment of reflection in honour of Mpigi, with many expressing optimism that his legacy would continue to influence governance and political engagement in Rivers State. His contributions to legislative debates, infrastructure advocacy, and environmental policy were repeatedly referenced by speakers.

While discussions around the donation continue, close associates of Wike maintain that the gesture is primarily aimed at supporting the family of the late senator and preserving his memory. They argue that Mpigi played a significant role in state politics and deserved sustained recognition beyond his lifetime.

Observers have noted that the development reflects broader patterns within Nigerian political culture, where financial and symbolic support is often extended to families of deceased political figures. Analysts suggest that such gestures reinforce alliances and demonstrate continuity within political networks.

In Rivers State, Mpigi’s death continues to resonate deeply within political circles. Colleagues describe him as a stabilising force who balanced loyalty with grassroots representation throughout his legislative career, earning respect across party lines and communities.

As preparations continue for further memorial activities, stakeholders emphasise the importance of sustained cooperation between political leaders and community members in preserving the senator’s legacy and ensuring ongoing support for his family.

The announcement has also sparked broader conversations about posthumous recognition in Nigerian politics, particularly the role of financial commitments in reinforcing loyalty and sustaining political relationships beyond the lifetime of key actors.

Political watchers also note that the evolving discourse around Mpigi’s legacy underscores the intersection of grief, governance and loyalty in Rivers State politics, where personal relationships often translate into institutional gestures that extend beyond formal political structures and into community driven support mechanisms for bereaved families. These dynamics highlight how state-level political culture in Nigeria continues to blend emotional solidarity with structured financial interventions in moments of loss and transition.
