The Nigeria Police Force in Edo State has uncovered and dismantled a criminal syndicate accused of carrying out abduction and extortion operations while posing as law enforcement officers, in what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in efforts to restore public trust and accountability within the system.

The operation, led by the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, followed a series of complaints from residents in Benin City and surrounding areas who reported being harassed, abducted, and forced to part with money by individuals claiming to be police personnel. The incidents were said to have occurred frequently along the Teboga axis off Aduwawa, a location that had increasingly drawn attention from both residents and security agencies due to suspicious activities.

According to the police, victims described a consistent pattern in the syndicate’s operations. Suspects, some dressed in police uniforms or using official accoutrements, would intercept unsuspecting individuals, often under the guise of routine checks. The victims would then be forced into vehicles and driven around different parts of the city, creating confusion and fear before being taken to Point of Sale operators where they were compelled to transfer money under duress.

Disturbed by the gravity and frequency of these allegations, the police command initiated a discreet and intelligence-led investigation. Surveillance operations, combined with technical intelligence and coordinated fieldwork, eventually led to the identification and arrest of members of the network.

Those arrested include both civilians and serving police officers, highlighting what authorities describe as a deeply troubling case of internal compromise. The suspects identified are Goodluck Jaja, Bonny Paul Onajite, Ehubarieme Wisdom, Arebame Gods Power, Mordi Philip, Destiny Emmanuel, Okon Elvis, Samuel Nicholas, and Etim Bright.

Police investigations indicate that the group functioned as a coordinated criminal enterprise, with clearly defined roles. Some members allegedly carried out the abductions and intimidation, while others, including transport operators, facilitated movement across locations. The involvement of a Point of Sale operator is believed to have enabled the group to quickly convert forced transfers into cash, thereby reducing traceability.

Authorities say the suspects exploited the credibility and authority associated with police uniforms and identification to deceive victims, allowing them to operate with a level of impunity over a period of time. This misuse of official status, particularly by serving officers, has been described as a serious breach of public trust and professional ethics.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed that serving officers implicated in the case are currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures, including orderly room trials, in line with police regulations. Following the conclusion of these internal processes, they are expected to be formally charged in court alongside their civilian accomplices.

Officials emphasized that the case would be pursued to its full legal conclusion, with assurances that no individual involved would be shielded from prosecution regardless of rank or status. The command reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, noting that decisive action was necessary to restore confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The police have also issued a public appeal, urging victims who may have encountered the syndicate to come forward with information that could assist in strengthening the case against the suspects. Authorities believe that additional victims may exist, given the organized nature and duration of the group’s activities.

In a broader advisory, the command warned Point of Sale operators and merchants to exercise caution and due diligence when handling transactions, particularly those initiated under suspicious circumstances. Operators were cautioned against facilitating unlawful transactions, whether knowingly or unknowingly, as complicity could result in arrest and prosecution.

The development comes amid ongoing nationwide efforts by the police leadership under Olatunji Rilwan Disu to reform the force, address misconduct, and improve public accountability. In recent years, concerns over abuse of power, extortion, and misconduct by a minority of officers have prompted calls for systemic reforms and stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures within the force.

Security analysts note that the Edo case underscores both the risks posed by internal corruption and the importance of intelligence-driven policing in uncovering such networks. The successful dismantling of the syndicate is seen as a positive step, but experts caution that sustained oversight and institutional reforms are necessary to prevent similar incidents.

For residents of Benin City, the arrests have brought a measure of reassurance, particularly among those who had expressed fear over encounters with individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers. Community leaders have welcomed the police action while calling for continued vigilance and community-police collaboration to ensure lasting security.

The police command has reaffirmed its commitment to sanitizing its ranks and ensuring that officers uphold the highest standards of professionalism. Authorities stressed that the actions of a few individuals do not reflect the values of the institution as a whole, but acknowledged the need for decisive measures to address misconduct wherever it occurs.

As investigations continue, the case is expected to shed further light on the operations of the syndicate, including the extent of its activities and any additional collaborators who may still be at large. Law enforcement officials maintain that the crackdown sends a clear message that criminal activities, particularly those carried out under the guise of authority, will not be tolerated.
