A fatal road accident involving a gas tanker and a commercial tricycle has claimed the life of a driver along the busy Awka–Enugu Expressway in southeastern Nigeria, raising fresh concerns about vehicle safety standards and road management in high-traffic areas.
The incident occurred on the morning of April 15, 2026, at Immigration Junction in Agu Awka, within Anambra State. According to officials, the crash involved a Mack Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker and a tricycle, commonly known as “keke,” resulting in the immediate death of the tricycle operator.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the tricycle driver was attempting to navigate through traffic diversion put in place by security personnel due to ongoing road construction when the fully loaded tanker lost control and ran over him. The tanker was said to have suffered brake failure, leading to the collision.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident through its Anambra State Command, providing details of the crash and the emergency response that followed. According to the agency’s Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, two male adults were involved in the accident—the deceased tricycle driver and the tanker driver, who escaped unhurt.
Onabe stated that rescue operatives arrived promptly at the scene at approximately 11:35 a.m. and initiated necessary emergency procedures. The victim was confirmed dead on site, and his remains were subsequently evacuated and deposited at the morgue of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital.
She attributed the cause of the crash to brake failure, which resulted in the tanker driver losing control of the vehicle. Given the highly flammable nature of the tanker’s LPG contents, emergency protocols were immediately activated, including placing personnel from the state fire service on standby to prevent any potential secondary incident such as an explosion.
The absence of further casualties was described as fortunate, considering the potential scale of damage such an accident could have caused. Authorities noted that the presence of volatile materials significantly increases the risk level in crashes involving tanker vehicles, especially in densely populated or high-traffic areas.
Also reacting to the incident, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State, Bridget Asekhauno, expressed concern over the loss of life and emphasized the preventable nature of the accident. She urged drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty and articulated vehicles, to ensure that their vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on journeys.
“This crash is avoidable,” she said, stressing the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations. She further advised motorists to observe speed limits and exercise heightened caution when approaching intersections, construction zones, and traffic diversions, where sudden changes in road conditions can increase the likelihood of accidents.
The Awka–Enugu Expressway is a major transport corridor linking parts of southeastern Nigeria, and it frequently experiences heavy vehicular movement, including commercial transport and haulage trucks. Ongoing reconstruction work along sections of the road has introduced additional challenges, including traffic diversions and temporary congestion points, which require careful navigation by drivers.

The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to reducing road traffic fatalities through a combination of enforcement, public education, and rapid response to emergencies. The agency also encouraged members of the public to make use of its toll-free emergency number, 122, to report accidents and seek assistance when needed.
