The All Progressives Congress in Kano State has formally dismissed reports suggesting internal divisions over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid, reaffirming what it described as unwavering support for the president ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

In a statement dated April 17, 2026, and signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Auwalu Abdullahi Soja, the party rejected claims circulating in parts of the media and on social platforms that it had withdrawn backing for Tinubu. The statement specifically targeted a message allegedly issued by a group identifying itself as the “Arewa APC Forum, Kano State Chapter,” which had claimed the party in Kano no longer supported the president’s re-election ambition.

The Kano APC described that claim as false, misleading, and unauthorised, insisting that the group in question does not represent the official structure of the party in the state. According to the statement, no recognized organ of the APC in Kano has taken any position contrary to its established support for Tinubu, and any suggestion otherwise should be disregarded.

The clarification comes amid increasing political maneuvering across Nigeria as early alignments for the 2027 general elections begin to take shape. Kano State, one of the country’s most politically significant northern strongholds, is expected to play a decisive role in determining the electoral balance, making any indication of shifting loyalties within the APC particularly consequential.

Party officials in Kano emphasized that the APC remains united behind Tinubu’s administration and its policy direction. They pointed to ongoing federal programs and political engagements as evidence of continued collaboration between the presidency and party stakeholders in the state.

Stone Reporters note that the emergence of unofficial groups claiming to speak on behalf of established political parties is not uncommon in Nigeria’s evolving political environment. Such groups often issue statements that create confusion, especially when tensions or dissatisfaction exist within certain factions, whether real or perceived.

However, the Kano APC leadership moved quickly to distance itself from the alleged forum, warning that individuals or groups issuing statements without authorization should not be taken seriously. The party stressed that official positions are communicated only through recognized channels and duly appointed spokespersons.

The reaffirmation also reflects broader efforts by the APC to maintain cohesion within its ranks as it navigates governance challenges and prepares for future electoral contests. Since assuming office, Tinubu’s administration has faced scrutiny over economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and currency policies, which have generated mixed reactions across different regions of the country.

Despite these challenges, party leaders have continued to publicly project unity, particularly in key states like Kano, where political influence extends beyond regional boundaries. Analysts suggest that maintaining a solid base in the North will be critical for any second-term strategy, given the region’s voting strength and historical role in national elections.

While the statement from Kano APC aims to close ranks, it also highlights underlying sensitivities within the party structure. Political observers note that early denials of internal dissent often signal efforts to preempt deeper fractures that could emerge as the electoral cycle approaches.

At the national level, the APC has yet to officially launch any campaign framework for the 2027 elections, but endorsements and loyalty declarations from state chapters are increasingly being interpreted as early positioning moves. In this context, Kano’s reaffirmation carries symbolic weight, reinforcing the perception of continued northern backing for the president.

For now, the party in Kano appears focused on consolidating its message and preventing misinformation from shaping public perception. Whether this unity holds as political competition intensifies remains to be seen, but the latest statement makes clear that, at least officially, support for Tinubu in Kano APC remains intact.
