Authorities in Rivers State have arrested three suspected kidnappers accused of orchestrating a string of abductions by luring victims through social media platforms, in what police describe as a growing pattern of technology-driven crime targeting unsuspecting individuals across Nigeria.

The arrests, confirmed by the Rivers State Police Command, followed a coordinated operation that led to the capture of the suspects while they were allegedly attempting to abduct another victim. Police say the suspects had developed a method of deception that relied on impersonation and false job offers, drawing victims from different parts of the country into dangerous situations.

The spokesperson for the command, Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed details of the operation in an official statement issued in Port Harcourt, the state capital. According to the statement, the suspects were linked to the kidnapping of a Lagos-based resident, Chukwudekwu Emmanuel, who was abducted on February 17, 2026, in Etche Local Government Area.

Police identified the suspects as Hinedu Okoro, 38, from Imo State; Okwudiri Njoku, 32, from Ozuzu in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State; and Onyema Sunday, 25, from Ika in Akwa Ibom State. Preliminary investigations indicate that the trio operated as part of a wider criminal syndicate that specialised in online deception as a gateway to kidnapping.

Investigators revealed that the suspects allegedly used popular social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, X, formerly known as Twitter, and Tinder, to target victims. By using photographs of well-known personalities and creating convincing profiles, they reportedly gained the trust of individuals seeking employment or business opportunities, before arranging physical meetings that ultimately led to abductions.

According to police accounts, the suspects were arrested on April 14, 2026, by operatives attached to the Emohua Division, who had been tracking their activities using intelligence and technology-driven strategies introduced by the Inspector-General of Police. The operation was triggered by ongoing investigations into previous kidnapping incidents linked to the group.

Authorities said the suspects were apprehended while attempting to lure another victim, identified as Chisom George, from Anambra State under the pretext of offering an interior decoration job. The intervention of police operatives at the critical moment prevented what officials believe could have resulted in another abduction.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to involvement in multiple kidnapping operations. Police sources stated that these included the abduction of Jennifer Nnaji, a resident of Enugu State, on March 1, 2026, as well as the kidnapping of Lakan Ayodele, a Lagos-based resident. Investigators are working to determine the full extent of the syndicate’s operations and identify additional victims who may not yet have come forward.

Security operatives recovered an operational motorcycle bearing registration number AHD 758 VT, believed to have been used in carrying out the suspects’ activities. The police indicated that the motorcycle, along with other potential evidence, is undergoing forensic examination as part of efforts to strengthen the case against the suspects.

Despite the arrests, authorities confirmed that the alleged leader of the syndicate managed to escape during the operation and remains at large. Police say efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fugitive, as well as dismantle any remaining network connected to the group.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He emphasised that the police would continue to deploy intelligence-led policing strategies and modern technology to combat evolving criminal tactics, particularly those exploiting digital platforms.

The case highlights a broader trend in Nigeria’s security landscape, where criminal groups increasingly leverage technology and social media to facilitate crimes such as kidnapping, fraud, and human trafficking. Analysts note that the use of online platforms allows perpetrators to reach a wider pool of potential victims while masking their identities, making detection more challenging for law enforcement agencies.

Experts warn that the growing sophistication of such operations underscores the need for increased public awareness about online safety. They advise individuals to exercise caution when engaging with unknown contacts, especially those offering unsolicited job opportunities or business deals that require travel or in-person meetings without proper verification.

Community leaders and security analysts have also called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies and technology companies to monitor and curb the misuse of digital platforms for criminal activities. While acknowledging the role of policing efforts, they stress that prevention will depend largely on public vigilance and improved digital literacy.

The arrests in Rivers State come amid ongoing efforts by Nigerian security agencies to address the persistent threat of kidnapping, which remains a major concern in several parts of the country. In recent years, authorities have intensified operations against criminal networks, resulting in a number of arrests and rescues, though challenges remain.

For residents of Rivers State, the latest development offers a measure of reassurance, even as concerns persist about the adaptability of criminal groups. Police have urged members of the public to report suspicious online interactions and movements promptly, noting that timely information can be critical in preventing crimes and apprehending perpetrators.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to pursue prosecution against the suspects, while expanding efforts to uncover the full scope of the syndicate’s activities. The case serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of crime in the digital age and the importance of coordinated responses to ensure public safety.
