Three persons have been confirmed dead and seven others injured in a road accident that occurred along the Onipepeye axis of the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash, which happened at about 5:40 pm on Saturday, involved a Sino truck and an Opel saloon car, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, said the accident was caused by excessive speeding and loss of control, factors he described as avoidable and recurring contributors to highway crashes in the state.

He explained that FRSC rescue operatives responded swiftly after receiving distress calls, arriving at the scene within minutes to manage the situation and evacuate victims. Emergency response teams were deployed from the sector command, and operations began shortly after the crash was reported.

Preliminary findings from the scene indicated that the collision was severe, involving a direct impact between the truck and the passenger vehicle, leading to multiple casualties and extensive damage to both vehicles.

A total of ten people were involved in the crash, comprising four adult males, three adult females, two female children, and one male child. Out of these, seven persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, while three were confirmed dead at the scene.

The fatalities included two adult males and one female child. The injured victims consisted of three adult females, three adult males, and one female child.

According to FRSC officials, the injured victims were immediately evacuated to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, where they are currently receiving medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue.

The rescue operation, according to the FRSC, was completed after securing the accident scene, clearing traffic obstruction caused by the crash, and ensuring the safe transfer of victims to medical facilities.

Authorities attributed the cause of the accident primarily to speed violations and loss of control, warning that such behaviours continue to pose significant risks on Nigerian highways. Officials noted that reckless driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes across major expressways in the country.

The FRSC Sector Commander used the opportunity to reiterate warnings to motorists, urging strict adherence to speed limits and regular maintenance of vehicles to prevent mechanical failure while in transit. He stressed that many road accidents are preventable if drivers exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations.

He further advised commercial and private drivers to avoid over-speeding, particularly on long stretches of highways such as the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, which has recorded multiple crash incidents in recent years due to high traffic volume and frequent speeding violations.

Road safety officials also emphasised the importance of early reporting of emergencies and adherence to safety protocols, noting that prompt response by rescue agencies can significantly reduce fatalities in crash situations.

The Ogun State sector of the FRSC has continued to intensify enforcement and awareness campaigns targeting drivers, transport unions, and road users in an effort to reduce the frequency of road traffic accidents in the state.

The latest crash adds to a series of similar incidents recorded on major highways in Ogun State, raising renewed concerns over road discipline, vehicle conditions, and enforcement of traffic laws.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to improving road safety measures, while urging motorists to take personal responsibility for safe driving practices in order to reduce avoidable loss of lives on Nigerian roads.
