The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has made a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime, arresting a notorious kidnapper and cultist who had been on the force's wanted list for years. The suspect, identified as Ubong Michael, also known as "Ubong Boy," was apprehended on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in a forested area near Ikot Aka Village in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
Acting on credible intelligence that the suspect had secretly returned to the community after a long period of hiding in Port Harcourt, operatives of the command swiftly mobilized to the scene. The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed in a statement that the 30-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday at about 5:00 p.m. without incident. Preliminary investigations have linked him to a string of high-profile kidnapping operations, including the abduction of a victim identified only as Gabriel in 2023 and another named John in 2025.
The true horror of the suspect's alleged crimes emerged when officers conducted a search of his hideout. According to the police, the search led to the recovery of a chilling array of items: one human skull believed to belong to a victim, one human bone, two live cartridges, and a dagger. During interrogation, Ubong Michael reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crimes. He is currently assisting investigators with vital information that could lead to the arrest of other fleeing members of the syndicate and the recovery of additional weapons and victims' remains.
The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has praised the operatives for their swift, intelligence-driven response. He reiterated the command's unwavering commitment to ridding the state of all forms of violent crime and assured residents that security forces remain on high alert. The police have also issued a stern warning to all criminal elements to desist from unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law, stressing that Akwa Ibom State will continue to be a hostile environment for crime.
"This arrest is a significant blow to the network of kidnappers and cultists who have terrorized our communities," a police source told this reporter. "The recovery of what appears to be human remains is deeply disturbing and points to the extreme brutality of these criminals." The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with timely and credible information. The command has assured residents of its sustained resolve to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be charged in court upon its conclusion.
