The Gombe State Police Command has officially dismissed viral social media reports that the country home of Nafiu Bala, a factional leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was set on fire by an angry mob. In a press statement issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, categorically denied the claims, confirming that no such incident has been recorded anywhere in the state.
The rumour, which began circulating around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, was fueled by posts that included a video of a burning property, falsely alleged to be Bala’s house. The police, however, stated that the footage was unrelated to the ADC factional leader and that no fire or attack had occurred at his residence. “The Gombe State Police Command wishes to categorically debunk the false information alleging that the house of Mr. Nafiu Bala was set ablaze in Gombe State,” the statement read. “The Command confirms that the report is false, as no such incident has been recorded anywhere in the State.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Ahmed Chuso, urged members of the public to disregard the misinformation and remain calm, assuring residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state. “The Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, CP Umar Ahmed Chuso, urges members of the public to disregard this misinformation and remain calm, as the Command remains committed to ensuring peace and security across Gombe State,” the statement added.
The false reports emerged just hours after the Supreme Court delivered a significant judgment in the protracted leadership crisis of the ADC, directing the David Mark‑led faction to return to the Federal High Court for the continuation of the hearing. Bala has been laying claim to the leadership of the party and has taken his case to the courts. On April 1, 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had derecognised the leadership of all ADC factions, citing an appeal court judgment. However, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 30, 2026, INEC updated its website, listing former Senate President David Mark as the national chairman of the ADC and Rauf Aregbesola as national secretary.
The police have clarified that despite the heightened political tension, no arson or attack occurred on Bala’s property, and the social media posts were based on false information. The command reiterated its dedication to protecting lives and property and urged citizens to rely on official channels for accurate updates.
