The Osun State Government has formally rejected allegations by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) that public schools in the state are plagued by inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of teachers, insisting that the claims do not reflect the current situation in the education sector.
The response was delivered on Friday in Osogbo by the Chairman of the Osun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Temitope Mustapha, during a one-day workshop organised for members of the state’s timetable committee. Speaking at the event, Mustapha stated that the government has continued to implement policies and programmes aimed at strengthening public education, and that available data does not support the claims made by the opposition.
According to him, the state government has carried out recruitment exercises to address staffing gaps in public schools. He said these efforts were designed to improve teacher distribution and ensure that students across different parts of the state have access to qualified educators. He added that the recruitment process was conducted to meet identified needs within the system.
Mustapha also pointed to ongoing improvements in school infrastructure, noting that renovation and upgrading projects have been undertaken in various public schools. He maintained that these interventions are part of a broader strategy to create a more conducive learning environment for students and teachers.
The allegations by the APC had raised concerns about the condition of public schools, with the party claiming that many institutions lack adequate facilities and sufficient teaching personnel. However, the TESCOM chairman described these claims as inaccurate, stating that the government’s actions in the sector demonstrate a commitment to addressing challenges where they exist.
During the workshop, Mustapha emphasised the importance of effective planning in school administration, particularly in the development of academic timetables. He explained that the training of timetable officers is intended to improve coordination within schools and ensure efficient use of available teaching resources.
He further stated that the existence of structured administrative systems, such as timetable committees, reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the management of public schools. According to him, these mechanisms help to optimise teacher deployment and minimise disruptions to academic activities.
The Osun State Government has consistently identified education as a priority sector, with policies focused on improving access and quality. Officials have indicated that investments in infrastructure and human resources are central to achieving these objectives.
While acknowledging that challenges can arise in any education system, Mustapha stressed that such issues are being addressed through established processes. He urged stakeholders to rely on verified information when assessing the condition of public schools in the state.
No independent data was presented at the workshop to support the APC’s claims, and the opposition has not released detailed evidence publicly in relation to the specific allegations. The government’s position, as stated by TESCOM, is based on its ongoing programmes and administrative records.
Participants at the workshop included education officials and timetable officers from across the state, who were engaged in discussions on best practices for academic scheduling. The event focused on improving operational efficiency within schools, particularly in the allocation of teaching periods and resources.
Education administrators present at the session were encouraged to apply standardised approaches to timetable preparation in order to enhance consistency across schools. The training also aimed to reduce inefficiencies that could arise from poor planning or uneven distribution of teaching responsibilities.
The issue of teacher availability and infrastructure remains a recurring topic in public discourse across Nigeria, where state governments are responsible for managing basic and secondary education. In Osun, as in other states, policy implementation and resource allocation continue to be closely monitored by political stakeholders and the public.
The Osun State Government reiterated during the event that it remains committed to improving the education sector through measurable actions, including recruitment and infrastructure development. Officials stated that progress in these areas is ongoing and subject to continuous evaluation.
The exchange between the government and the opposition highlights differing perspectives on the condition of public schools in the state. While the APC has raised concerns, the government maintains that its interventions are addressing existing needs and improving overall standards.
As of the time of the statement, there has been no official report from an independent body confirming the specific claims made by the opposition. The government has therefore maintained its position that the allegations are not supported by verifiable evidence.
Authorities have indicated that engagement with stakeholders will continue, with a focus on strengthening the education system through administrative improvements and targeted investments. The workshop in Osogbo forms part of these ongoing efforts to enhance school management and ensure effective delivery of education services.
