Allegation of Military Involvement in Ogwashi-Uku Assault Sparks Call for Investigation

A human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, has raised allegations that a young man identified as Francis was assaulted in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, in an incident that reportedly involved suspected cultists and personnel of the Nigerian Army.

In a public statement shared on social media, Gwamnishu alleged that the incident occurred at a hotel in Ogwashi-Uku, where Francis was confronted by individuals described as suspected cult members. According to the account, the group allegedly attempted to force him into cult affiliation and seized his mobile phone during the confrontation.

The activist claimed that Francis struggled to retrieve his phone during the incident, which escalated tensions at the scene. He further alleged that hotel management contacted soldiers, who were deployed to the location.

Gwamnishu alleged that instead of protecting the individual involved, the soldiers were seen interacting with the group and subsequently took Francis away, where he was allegedly subjected to physical assault. He described the incident as unacceptable and called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of all parties involved.

The allegations have generated concern online, particularly regarding the role of security personnel in responding to civilian disputes and criminal-related incidents. Gwamnishu called on the Nigerian Army to investigate the matter and ensure accountability where necessary.

He also used the incident to highlight broader concerns about cult-related violence and youth vulnerability, warning against involvement in cult groups and urging young people to resist pressure or coercion. He stated that cultism often leads to violence, legal consequences, and long-term harm to individuals involved.

At the time of reporting, there has been no publicly available official response from the Nigerian Army regarding the allegations. It is also unclear whether a formal complaint has been filed with relevant security or oversight authorities concerning the incident.

Delta State Police authorities have not issued a statement on the matter as of now, and details surrounding any official investigation remain unconfirmed.

The Nigerian Army has previously stated in various public engagements that its personnel operate under strict rules of engagement and are subject to disciplinary procedures in cases of misconduct. However, each specific allegation requires formal investigation before conclusions can be drawn.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly called for transparent investigations into incidents involving security personnel and civilians, particularly in situations where allegations of excessive force or misconduct are raised.

As of the time of this report, the claims remain allegations made by a private citizen and human rights activist, and have not been independently verified by security agencies or judicial authorities.
