The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a motorcyclist following an encounter with officers of the Border Patrol Unit along the Iseyin/Oyo Road on Saturday, 2 May 2026.
The incident, which the police described as “an encounter” between the officers and a Fulani man riding a motorcycle, has triggered a brief protest in Iseyin and led to the immediate detention of the officers involved. The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said in a statement that the motorcyclist became “restive and violent” during the interaction, leading to a confrontation. “During the ensuing clash, he was struck and fell from his motorcycle,” the statement read. The victim was rushed to a medical facility but was confirmed dead on arrival.
The deceased has been identified by multiple sources as 25‑year‑old Umar Yahúza, a commercial motorcyclist. He was later buried in accordance with Islamic rites. Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbebga, ordered the immediate detention of all officers involved.
An assistant superintendent of police and an inspector attached to the Border Patrol Unit are currently in police custody pending a thorough investigation. The commissioner has also directed that an autopsy be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The killing sparked a brief protest in Iseyin, where members of the Hausa community and commercial motorcyclists blocked major roads and barricaded a police station. However, authorities said the situation was swiftly brought under control after assurances that justice would be served. The Police Public Relations Officer, Olushola Olayinka, confirmed that the protest was peacefully dispersed.
This latest incident comes amid heightened public scrutiny of police conduct across Nigeria, following the recent case in Delta State where an assistant superintendent of police was filmed shooting a handcuffed suspect at close range. That officer has since been dismissed and is facing prosecution. In Oyo State, the police command has promised a full brief as investigations progress.
