Sixteen years after the death of one of Nigeria’s most unassuming leaders, former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid a glowing tribute to his former boss, the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as a "gentleman president" and a rare breed of servant leader whose humility and integrity remain a beacon for public service in Nigeria.

The tribute, personally signed by Jonathan and issued on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the 16th anniversary of Yar’Adua's passing, painted a picture of a partnership rooted not just in political expediency but in a shared vision of a just and equitable nation. Jonathan, who served as Vice President under Yar’Adua before assuming the presidency following his death in 2010, said he reflected on the late leader's life with immense gratitude, calling it a "privilege" to have served under him. In the statement, Jonathan referred to Yar’Adua as a "dear hero, icon of integrity, selfless patriot, brother, and worthy partner in service"

In a deeply personal address, Jonathan recalled the bond they shared, emphasizing that their administration was driven by a desire to build an inclusive Nigeria. “Our partnership was anchored on a common vision: to build an inclusive, united, and just nation,” Jonathan said. He noted that Yar’Adua was not a man of loud pronouncements but of “quiet but profound conviction,” one who relentlessly pursued the rule of law and the sanctity of the ballot. “Yar’Adua was a man of quiet but profound conviction who believed that the strength of a country is measured by its commitment to the rule of law and the sanctity of the ballot”

Perhaps the most striking accolade came as Jonathan eulogized the former President’s unique leadership style. He stressed that Yar’Adua did not wield power as a weapon but as a tool for service. “He did not just lead; he served with a humility that is rare in the corridors of power, often putting national stability above personal or political gain,” the former President stated. He praised Yar’Adua’s “record in peace-building” as an “enduring legacy,” particularly regarding the Niger Delta, where the late President’s amnesty programme dramatically reduced militant attacks on oil facilities. Jonathan noted that the late President understood that fixing a nation required the courage to “admit flaws and the sincerity to fix them”

The former President did not stop at mere remembrance. He used the platform to challenge the current generation of leaders in the country, holding up Yar’Adua’s tenure as a lesson in transparent and accountable governance. “For leaders, the life of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua serves as an enduring lesson. His example teaches us that leadership is a sacred trust, and that progress is only sustainable when it is rooted in transparency, accountability, and a genuine love for the people”

Umaru Yar’Adua took the baton of leadership from Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 2007, at a time when the country was plagued by electoral malpractices and insecurity in the crude oil-rich Niger Delta. Despite battling the debilitating heart condition that eventually claimed his life on May 5, 2010, at the age of 58, his short tenure is often cited by political analysts as a golden brief period of stability. His introduction of the Electoral Reform Committee and his declaration that Nigeria’s “elections were not free and fair” set a pace for democratic accountability rarely matched since.

In a separate tribute, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, also eulogized the late leader, describing him as a patriot who prioritized peace and the welfare of ordinary citizens. Saraki noted that even 16 years after his passing, Yar’Adua’s leadership style remains a reference point for selfless governance, a leader Nigerians still hold in high regard. As the nation continues to grapple with economic hardship and security challenges, the voices of Jonathan and Saraki calling for a return to Yar’Adua’s brand of service struck a powerful chord.

As the date of his passing slips further into history, the memory of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the "Gentleman President," remains a significant yardstick for what a peaceful and functional Nigeria could look like. As Jonathan concluded his tribute, he called on Nigerians to rededicate themselves to the causes Yar’Adua pursued with passion, adding: “Sixteen years later, his strides continue to testify for him”
