A university student in Ekiti State has accused her former boyfriend of secretly recording her during intimate video calls and later posting a cropped version of the footage on TikTok without her consent. The victim, identified as Joy Olawale to protect her privacy, made the allegation in a petition to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). She named her ex‑boyfriend as Ambrose Oluwadamilola.

According to Olawale, the recordings were made without her knowledge while they were still in a relationship. She said Oluwadamilola later shared a cropped clip of the video on TikTok and tagged her account. She also alleged that he threatened to circulate the full videos to her friends and family members if she did not comply with his demands.

The relationship reportedly began under false pretences. Olawale told FIJ that Oluwadamilola first contacted her on Facebook while pretending to be a woman. After building a rapport, he later introduced himself as the woman’s male cousin who had developed an interest in her. The two eventually began communicating directly as a couple. They separated for a period but later rekindled contact.

Olawale said she sent private images to him during the relationship and also transferred money to him on several occasions. However, she ended the relationship after discovering inconsistencies in his claims about his finances, particularly when her child fell ill and he said he could not assist.

After the breakup, the harassment escalated. Olawale alleged that Oluwadamilola created another fake female profile to contact her again. Through that fake identity, he sent her the private videos and threatened to share them widely. She said he told her that anyone interested in the full video should contact him directly.

In messages shared with FIJ, Oluwadamilola was quoted as saying he wanted “50% of your friends and family to have this” and made other threatening remarks. When FIJ contacted Oluwadamilola for comment, he initially blocked the number. He later answered a call from a different line and hurled insults at the reporter before eventually responding with a brief message: “no lies.”

Olawale said she is seeking justice and protection, noting that the incident has caused her extreme distress and fear for her safety and reputation. She has not indicated whether she has reported the matter to the police, but sources suggest she is considering legal action.

The case highlights the growing danger of digital sexual violence in Nigeria, where intimate images are often weaponised by former partners. Legal experts say non‑consensual sharing of private sexual images can be prosecuted under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act and various state laws. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) also has provisions protecting victims of sexual exploitation.

As of press time, Oluwadamilola has not been arrested, and the Ekiti State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the matter. Olawale is calling on authorities to investigate and ensure that the offending content is taken down from social media platforms. Meanwhile, digital rights advocates have urged victims of non‑consensual image sharing to report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) or local cybercrime units.

The story of Joy Olawale is a stark reminder that the internet does not forget, and for many young women, a relationship that ends in bitterness can quickly spiral into a cycle of online blackmail and public humiliation. The fight for justice, in this case, has only just begun.
