Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have reportedly launched coordinated attacks on two military formations in Yobe State, leaving dozens of soldiers and police personnel feared dead in one of the latest major assaults linked to insurgent activities in northeastern Nigeria.
According to emerging reports, the attacks occurred in areas linked to Buni Yadi, the hometown of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni. Local and security sources indicated that heavily armed insurgents stormed the military positions during the assault, triggering intense gun battles with security forces.
Early casualty figures circulating in local reports suggested that several soldiers and police officers may have been killed during the coordinated attacks, although Nigerian military authorities had not officially confirmed the exact number of fatalities at the time of reporting.
Reports from security-focused outlets stated that the attackers targeted military bases and security installations using heavy weapons, forcing prolonged confrontations with troops stationed in the area. Some reports also alleged that weapons and military equipment may have been carted away by the insurgents after parts of the facilities were overrun.
Buni Yadi and surrounding communities in Yobe State have experienced repeated Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks over the years due to their strategic location within Nigeria’s insurgency-affected northeast corridor. The area has historically witnessed attacks on military formations, police facilities, schools and civilian communities.
The latest incident comes amid renewed concerns over escalating insurgent operations across parts of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states despite ongoing military offensives under Operation Hadin Kai. In recent months, security agencies have intensified operations targeting insurgent enclaves, while extremist groups continue launching ambushes, raids and attacks on isolated communities and security positions.
Security analysts note that attacks on military formations are often aimed at weakening troop presence, seizing weapons and demonstrating operational strength. Several recent incidents across the North-East have involved coordinated assaults on rural bases and checkpoints.
Residents in parts of Yobe reportedly fled affected areas amid fears of further violence following the attacks. However, independent verification of some circulating casualty figures remained difficult due to limited official statements and ongoing security operations in the area.
At the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army and other security authorities had yet to release a comprehensive official briefing detailing the scale of casualties, operational losses or the status of reinforcement efforts connected to the attacks.
