The Nigerian U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have secured their place at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. They advanced past Malawi’s Young Scorchers with a 3-2 aggregate victory on Saturday, May 9, 2026, despite losing the second leg 2-1 in Lilongwe. The result extends Nigeria’s remarkable record of qualifying for every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2002.

The Nigerians traveled to the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe with a comfortable 2-0 aggregate lead from the first leg, which was played a week prior in Ikenne, Ogun State. However, Malawi, backed by a passionate home crowd, came out firing and threatened to overturn the deficit. Faith Chinzimu, fresh from a European title triumph with BK Häcken, ignited the contest early, nodding home an opener in the 8th minute to put the hosts ahead on the day and reduce Nigeria’s aggregate lead.

The Falconets responded immediately, with Kindness Ifeanyi delivering a dangerous cross into the box that was met by a powerful header from Favour Nkwocha, but the effort crashed off the woodwork. The Malawians carried their 1-0 lead into the halftime break, keeping the tie firmly in the balance.

The pressure on Nigeria intensified ten minutes into the second half when Faith Chinzimu struck again to complete her brace. The goal, a product of a defensive lapse from the Falconets, levelled the aggregate score at 2-2 and put Nigeria’s perfect qualification record under serious threat.

Facing the very real prospect of elimination, Falconets head coach Moses Aduku turned to his bench for a hero. His decision paid off instantly. In the 62nd minute, substitute Precious Oscar, who came on with a specific assignment, forced an error from a Malawian defender, dispossessed her, and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. The crucial away goal restored Nigeria’s aggregate advantage and silenced the Bingu National Stadium.

The resilient Falconets defense then held firm for the remainder of the match, absorbing late pressure from a desperate Malawian side to secure the vital aggregate victory. The 3-2 aggregate win confirmed Nigeria’s spot as one of Africa’s four representatives at Poland 2026.

The qualification marks the Falconets’ 12th appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The team, which has been runner-up twice (Germany 2010 and Canada 2014), will now set their sights on capturing the title for the first time. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Poland from September 5 to 27, 2026.
