The Abia State Police Command has recorded two major operational successes, taking armed and dangerous suspects off the streets in a clear demonstration of its renewed commitment to fighting crime. In the first breakthrough, operatives of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) arrested 21‑year‑old Michael Kalu, a suspected armed robber and cultist. During the operation, officers recovered one English pistol and one locally made pistol, effectively removing two dangerous weapons from circulation. The VCRU, a brainchild of Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is designed to tackle violent crimes head‑on, and this arrest marks its first operational result.

The second arrest was carried out by the Osisioma Division. Officers apprehended 23‑year‑old Obinna Chimezie while he was in the act of vandalizing a gas pipeline that supplies Geometric Power along the Enugu/Port Harcourt Expressway. Chimezie had allegedly built a makeshift tent near the pipeline where he used drugs and stored tools for his criminal activity. When police swooped on him, they recovered a toy gun, which the suspect may have used to intimidate passers‑by or as a scare tactic. The tent was dismantled, and Chimezie was taken into custody. His actions were a direct attack on critical national infrastructure that supplies electricity to homes and businesses in Abia State.

Both suspects are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further interrogation and possible prosecution. The Abia State Police Command has reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, and has called on members of the public to continue providing useful information that can lead to more arrests. The successful apprehension of Michael Kalu and Obinna Chimezie serves as a warning to criminals that the state is no longer a safe haven for those who engage in armed robbery, cultism, vandalism, or any form of economic sabotage. The police have also urged parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and discourage them from involvement in drug abuse and criminality, which often lead to a life of ruin.
