The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has denied knowledge of any alleged political problems involving Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the All Progressives Congress, insisting that he cannot comment on matters he was neither involved in nor informed about.
Speaking during a media interaction, Wike dismissed suggestions that he should explain developments surrounding Fubara’s reported political challenges or possible issues connected to the APC.
“I am not a native doctor or prophet and Fubara did not tell me he had a problem in APC,” Wike said while responding to questions from journalists.
The former Rivers State governor further stated that he was not in a position to interpret political developments involving other individuals, stressing that he should only be questioned on matters directly concerning him.
“I don't know what's happening in the state, and I don't also know what the public results of the screening are. Even if they do, why would I comment? I don't know the reason they have,” he said.
Wike added that he had no room to speculate about issues outside his direct involvement.
“So you should ask me questions about what pertains to me, not what pertains to other people, because I am not a party,” he stated.
The remarks come amid continued political tension in Rivers State following the prolonged conflict between Wike and Governor Fubara, a political dispute that has dominated Rivers politics since shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023.
The crisis has involved divisions within the Rivers State House of Assembly, disagreements over local government administration, disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party structure in the state, and repeated allegations of political interference from rival camps.
Speculation has also continued over possible political realignments involving Governor Fubara and the APC, especially after the governor’s relationship with Wike deteriorated publicly. However, neither Fubara nor APC officials have officially confirmed any political move regarding party membership or alignment.
Wike’s latest statement appears aimed at distancing himself from claims that he possesses insider knowledge about Fubara’s political decisions or internal APC matters.
During the interaction, the FCT minister also criticized attempts to shift attention away from governance issues toward political speculation, urging journalists to compare discussions around governance with what he described as coalition politics and public distractions.
The political rift between Wike and Fubara remains one of the most significant power struggles in Nigeria’s contemporary political landscape due to the influence both men command within Rivers State and national politics.
Despite several reconciliation efforts reportedly involving senior political figures and interventions from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, tensions between both camps have continued intermittently.
Observers say the ongoing crisis could have implications for political alignments ahead of future elections, especially considering Rivers State’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s political structure and voting strength.
At the time of reporting, Governor Fubara had not publicly responded to Wike’s latest comments.
