A 37‑year‑old honey seller, Isah Usman, has been arrested by the Niger State Police Command for allegedly raping three young boys aged 13, 14 and 15 on multiple occasions in his room located in the Angwan Biri area of Minna. The suspect reportedly lured his victims by giving them money and honey after each assault and then threatened to kill them if they ever told anyone about the abuse. The case has sparked outrage among residents and renewed calls for stronger child protection measures across the state.
The arrest came after a formal report was lodged at the Bosso Police Division on April 23, 2026. The complaint detailed how the suspect had been forcefully engaging in unnatural carnal knowledge of the minors over a period of time, using his room as the site of the abuse. According to a statement by the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the victims disclosed that the suspect would give them N500 and some honey after each act, a tactic clearly designed to buy their silence and compliance. He also threatened to kill them if the abuse was ever exposed, a psychological control that kept the boys trapped in a cycle of fear and shame.
Medical evidence has confirmed the allegations. The three victims were immediately taken to the Police Clinic in Minna for a detailed medical examination. The results showed deep penetration, confirming that the boys had indeed been subjected to the unnatural acts described in the complaint. The suspect, who was arrested shortly after the report was filed, reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation, leaving investigators with little doubt about his culpability. The case has since been transferred to the Niger State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further investigations, and the police have vowed that Usman will be charged to court for diligent prosecution.
This case sends a clear message about the vulnerability of children, especially boys, who are often overlooked in public discussions about child sexual abuse. While much attention is paid to the sexual abuse of girls, abuse against boys remains underreported, under‑investigated and shrouded in stigma. Creating safe spaces where boys can disclose abuse and receive appropriate support must become a national priority. The suspect, who sold honey for a living, used his profession as a cover, building trust with the minors before turning his home into a prison of repeated trauma. His confession, combined with the medical evidence, is expected to form the backbone of a strong prosecution case that could lead to a lengthy prison sentence if he is convicted.
The police have moved swiftly to reassure the public that the fight against child abuse remains a top priority. SP Wasiu Abiodun stated that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded. “The suspect also confessed to the act. He has been transferred to SCID Minna for further investigations, after which he will be charged to court for prosecution,” Abiodun said in a statement. This case also follows a pattern of similar incidents in Niger State and other parts of Nigeria where adults have used their position of trust to groom and exploit minors. In 2022, a 40‑year‑old man in the same state admitted luring his victims with as little as N200 and bread before raping them. In 2019, another man was arrested for raping six boys after luring them with sweets and biscuits.
Isah Usman now sits behind bars in Minna, where his fate will be decided by the courts. The three young boys he allegedly preyed upon will carry the physical and emotional scars of his betrayal. As Nigeria continues to grapple with a pervasive culture of child sexual abuse, this case serves as a grim reminder that predators are often not strangers lurking in the shadows, but familiar faces with ready smiles and cheap gifts. The state has a duty to protect its children, and the prosecution of Usman will be watched as a test of its commitment to that duty.
