The Delta State Police Command has intensified its fight against child trafficking, rescuing a two‑year‑old child from a suspected abductor and reuniting the victim with her parents in Warri. The incident occurred on May 10, 2026, at about 9:15 a.m., when operatives of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) in Warri successfully rescued the child and also prevented the lynching of the suspect by an angry mob at Igbudu Market.
The suspect, identified as Fejiro Obaduemu, aged 29, of Idesor Street, Isi Layout, Warri, was intercepted by vigilant residents while carrying the child concealed inside a sack bag, an act that raised immediate suspicion of child stealing. Before the suspect could be mobbed by the crowd, QRS operatives swiftly responded to the scene, rescued both the suspect and the child, and evacuated them to safety. The suspect, who sustained injuries from the mob attack, was taken to the Police Clinic in Warri for medical attention and subsequently taken into custody for investigation.
Further investigation conducted on May 11, 2026, led to the successful tracing of the child’s parents, and the child was formally reunited with the family in the presence of leaders of the Hausa community in Warri. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly confessed to being sent by an unidentified accomplice in Warri to steal the child. Police sources indicated that the suspect claimed she was acting on instructions from an unnamed individual who promised to reward her after the child was delivered. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the said accomplice and unravel the wider criminal network connected to the abduction.
The Commissioner of Police for Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the operatives for their swift intervention and assured residents that the command remains committed to protecting children and combating all forms of human trafficking and related crimes. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities involving children to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines. The command has also intensified patrols around markets, schools, and other public places, as well as stepped up community engagement to raise awareness about child abduction and trafficking.
The case has drawn attention to the prevalence of child abduction in Nigeria, where criminal networks often target children for sale, forced labour, or exploitation. In recent months, similar incidents have been reported in Lagos, Kano, and Rivers states, leading to increased public anxiety. The Delta State Police Command has reassured residents that it will not relent in its efforts to dismantle child trafficking syndicates and bring perpetrators to justice.
As of the time of this report, the suspect remains in custody, and the search for her accomplice continues. The rescued child has been returned to her family, who have expressed profound gratitude to the police for their prompt action. The police have urged anyone with useful information about the accomplice or similar criminal activities to come forward.
