The speaker of the legislative council of the Gwagwalada area council in the Federal Capital Territory, Honourable Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, has died in a road crash on his way back from a political meeting in Kwali, alongside his aide, also identified as Ibrahim Ibwa. A third passenger sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. The crash occurred around 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Sheda village along the Abuja-Lokoja highway, within the Gwagwalada area council complex. The vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz car, was involved in a head-on collision with a Sino truck. The aide died instantly at the scene. The speaker was rushed to Legend Hospital in Gwagwalada but was later transferred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he died in the early hours of Thursday while receiving treatment.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident. An FRSC official who participated in the rescue operation told reporters that one victim died at the scene, while two others, including the speaker, were taken to the hospital. The FRSC official added that the corpse of the deceased was deposited at Legend Hospital mortuary in Gwagwalada. The remains of the late speaker were buried according to Islamic rites on Thursday in his Ibwa community within the Gwagwalada area council. Dignitaries at the burial included the chairman-elect of the Gwagwalada area council, Hon. Mohammed Kasim Ikwa; former council chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mustapha; former House of Representatives member, Isah Egah Dobi; and other prominent politicians.

Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, popularly known as Hon. Ibwa, was a well-known figure in Gwagwalada politics. He previously served as the APC chairmanship candidate for the area council and was a respected grassroots politician. Until his death, he served as the speaker of the legislative arm of the Gwagwalada area council, where he was known for his active role in legislative matters and community development. In 2025, Hon. Ibwa was credited with donating a transformer to boost electricity supply to the Ibwa community, a gesture that earned him the affection of his constituents. Senator Philip Aduda, the FCT APC senatorial aspirant, led a delegation to commiserate with the family of the late speaker and the people of Ibwa community. He described the speaker’s death as shocking and painful, not only to the people of Gwagwalada but to the entire FCT.

The Kwali–Gwagwalada road has become a notorious corridor for fatal accidents. In 2022, 19 persons were killed in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Yangoji-Gwagwalada road. The latest crash has renewed calls for increased safety measures on the busy highway. The FRSC has yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the crash, but eyewitnesses attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking by the driver of the Mercedes-Benz. The driver of the Sino truck is assisting with inquiries. The tragic loss of Hon. Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa serves as a sobering reminder of the perils of Nigeria’s roads, where even political leaders returning from meetings are not immune to the dangers of reckless driving and poorly maintained highways.
