A brutal attack unfolded in Lakwaya village, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, on Thursday afternoon, May 14, 2026, when heavily armed bandits stormed the community on more than 30 motorcycles, firing indiscriminately and leaving at least two people dead, several others injured, and a significant number of cattle rustled. The assailants, who struck around 4 p.m., crossed into Lakwaya from Gidan Biris, a border town between Kano and Katsina states. A traditional ruler in the village, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Daily Nigerian that one person was killed in Lakwaya and another in Gidan Biris. “The attackers came on more than 30 motorcycles around 4 p.m. and started shooting sporadically,” the traditional ruler said, adding that troops had arrived at the scene and were engaging the bandits in a fierce gun battle. “Right now, as we are speaking with you, there is a clash going on. Soldiers have just arrived and are responding accordingly. As I am speaking with you now, I am standing beside the body of one of those killed,” he said.
Residents fled in panic as the gunmen shot randomly at people and livestock. No case of abduction was reported, but the traditional ruler confirmed that the attackers made away with a large number of cattle. The body of one victim was taken to Gwarzo General Hospital for medical examination and was expected to be returned to Lakwaya for burial once normalcy was restored. Efforts to obtain official confirmation from military authorities were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The attack on Lakwaya is the latest in a string of violent incidents that have plagued Kano’s border communities, where bandits from neighbouring Katsina State frequently cross over to raid villages. Less than a week earlier, on May 9, 2026, suspected bandits attacked Mainika village in the same Gwarzo LGA, killing a herder and rustling over 300 cattle. In another attack on May 11, 2026, bandits stormed Yankamaye community in Tsanyawa LGA, killing five residents and injuring four others. Residents of these border communities have repeatedly called on the Kano State Government and security agencies to deploy a stronger security presence to prevent further bloodshed.
The persistent attacks have heightened fears among residents of Lakwaya, a settlement that has repeatedly suffered raids over the past year. The remote location of the community often delays security response, leaving villagers vulnerable to attacks from armed groups operating across the porous border. The Kano State Police Command confirmed that operatives and members of the Joint Task Force had been deployed to the affected area and had launched efforts to track down and arrest the perpetrators.
