POTISKUM, Yobe State — A wedding celebration in Potiskum turned fatal after a young man, Abubakar Haruna, was killed in a road accident involving a motorcycle convoy participating in a bride conveyance procession, raising fresh concerns over reckless riding during social ceremonies in the area.
The incident occurred on Friday when a group of young men escorting a bride reportedly rode motorcycles at high speed through a busy part of the town. According to eyewitness accounts reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the riders engaged in dangerous manoeuvres and displayed little regard for pedestrians and other road users as the convoy moved through populated streets.
The situation reportedly escalated when the convoy reached a crowded section of the road. Abubakar Haruna, who was standing by the roadside at the time, was struck on the head by one of the speeding motorcyclists. The impact reportedly caused him to lose balance before falling into a nearby drainage channel.
He was said to have sustained severe injuries from both the collision and the fall. Witnesses and relatives indicated that he died before he could receive medical assistance.
The deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, confirmed the incident and described how the situation unfolded within moments. He said the convoy’s speed and reckless behaviour created a chaotic environment that left little room for reaction or avoidance.
Muhammad described his brother’s death as sudden and preventable, expressing deep grief over what he said could have been avoided with more responsible conduct during the celebration.
According to him, “Abubakar Haruna’s death is heartbreaking, sudden, and entirely preventable,” adding that the family was devastated by the loss.
He further explained that reckless motorcycle riding during bride conveyance ceremonies had become increasingly common in Potiskum and surrounding communities, where youths often engage in high-speed displays and stunts as part of wedding festivities.
He noted that such behaviour has turned what should be celebratory events into recurring safety risks, with pedestrians and other road users frequently exposed to danger during convoy movements.
Muhammad Haruna called on authorities in Yobe State to introduce stricter safety regulations and enforce existing traffic laws to curb dangerous riding during social events. He warned that without urgent intervention, similar incidents could continue to claim innocent lives.
Local residents have also expressed concern over the growing trend of aggressive motorcycle processions during weddings, describing it as a developing public safety challenge in urban and semi-urban parts of the state.
Road safety experts have long warned that motorcycle convoys, especially when unregulated, can pose serious risks in densely populated areas. High speed, lack of coordination, and stunt riding significantly increase the likelihood of collisions involving both participants and bystanders.
In northern Nigeria, bride conveyance celebrations often involve large groups of motorcyclists and vehicles escorting brides through towns and villages. While culturally significant, these processions have increasingly drawn criticism due to safety concerns, particularly when participants disregard traffic rules.
Authorities in Yobe State have previously urged residents to observe caution during such events, emphasizing the importance of responsible riding, speed control, and respect for other road users. However, enforcement remains inconsistent in many communities, especially during social gatherings.
As of the time of reporting, no official statement had been released by state authorities regarding the incident, though local sources indicate that community leaders may engage youths to address growing concerns over reckless riding practices.
The death of Abubakar Haruna has left the Potiskum community in mourning, with calls for stronger regulation of convoy activities gaining renewed attention in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Investigations into the incident are expected to continue, while residents await possible policy responses aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
