A devastating fire broke out at a plastic manufacturing company located along Umuoji Road, Nkpor, in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday evening, May 16, 2026, destroying parts of the structure as well as goods and property worth several millions of naira. The blaze, which was caused by welding activities carried out within the company premises during the day, sent thick smoke billowing into the sky and threw the industrial community into a state of panic. No casualties were recorded, according to the Anambra State Fire Service, which deployed a team of firefighters who battled the inferno for several hours before bringing it under control.
The fire, which occurred late on Saturday, was first noticed by workers who saw flames erupting from a corner of the complex. Eyewitnesses reported that thick smoke quickly engulfed a large section of the vicinity, and the fire raged for several minutes before firefighters arrived at the scene. “The fire started from a corner of the complex before thick smoke engulfed a large section of the vicinity. It burnt for several minutes before the arrival of firefighters,” an eyewitness told newsmen. The fire, which spread rapidly due to the highly flammable nature of plastic materials, damaged raw materials used for plastic production, parts of the building, production machines, finished plastic products, and some chemical drums within the premises.
Confirming the incident, the Head of Media and Publicity for the Anambra State Fire Service, Mr. Chukwudi Chiketa, said in a statement that a crew and firefighting equipment were swiftly deployed following a distress call received at about 1720 hours (5:20 p.m.) on Saturday. “Upon arrival, the firefighting team engaged the blaze with courage and professionalism, battling the fire continuously until it was finally brought under control,” Chiketa stated. The firefighters worked tirelessly through the night, and the team finally withdrew from the scene at about 0520 hours (5:20 a.m.) on Sunday morning, May 17, 2026, marking nearly a 12‑hour operation.
The Anambra State Fire Service noted that the swift intervention of its gallant officers helped save substantial properties and equipment from complete destruction. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire outbreak was caused by welding activities carried out within the company premises during the day,” the statement read. Welding, a common industrial activity, generates intense heat and sparks, which can easily ignite flammable materials such as plastic, rubber, and chemical solvents if proper safety measures are not strictly observed.
This incident underscores the persistent fire safety challenges facing industrial operations in Anambra State, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Plastic factories are especially vulnerable because the raw materials used in production are highly combustible, and a small spark can trigger a catastrophic blaze. In recent years, there have been multiple reports of fire outbreaks in similar facilities across the state, including the Ngobros Factory in Nnewi and the Louis Carter Industries, where millions of naira in goods and equipment were lost. These recurring incidents have raised concerns among safety experts and business owners about the level of compliance with fire safety regulations.
The Anambra State Fire Service used the incident to issue a strong warning to industrial operators. Chiketa urged members of the public to remain safety-conscious at all times, adding that welding operations and other heat‑related industrial activities should be carried out with extreme caution and under proper safety measures to prevent avoidable fire disasters. “The fire service further commends its officers and men for their bravery, professionalism, and commitment to duty in protecting lives and property,” the statement concluded.
The exact financial value of the loss has not yet been determined, but industry observers estimate that the damage to raw materials, production machines, finished goods, and chemical drums could run into hundreds of millions of naira. The destruction of production machines is particularly significant, as these are often expensive and may take months to replace, potentially leading to job losses and disruptions in the supply chain of plastic products in the South‑East region.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government has not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but the state fire service has promised to continue its investigation to determine the full extent of the damage and to ensure that all necessary safety protocols are enforced in industrial zones across the state. Business owners and factory managers are being urged to conduct regular safety audits, install adequate firefighting equipment, and train their workers on emergency response procedures.
As the management of the affected factory begins the painful process of assessing losses and planning for recovery, the incident serves as a stark reminder that a moment of carelessness during routine maintenance or construction work can lead to disaster. For the workers who escaped without injury, the loss of their workplace is a heavy blow, and the community of Nkpor is left to count the cost of a fire that should have been prevented.
