Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has assured residents of Ekiti State that their votes will count in the forthcoming elections, pledging that the electoral body remains committed to conducting a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process.
Yakubu gave the assurance during engagements with stakeholders in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday as preparations intensify for upcoming electoral activities in the state. His remarks come amid growing public concerns in parts of the country over electoral integrity, voter confidence, and the conduct of elections.
“Your votes will count,” the INEC chairman told voters and political stakeholders while reaffirming the commission’s commitment to fairness and neutrality in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
The INEC chairman stressed that the commission had continued to improve its operational systems, logistics, and technological deployment to strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process. He also urged political parties, security agencies, civil society groups, and voters to play active roles in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
According to Yakubu, the commission has made significant preparations regarding voter education, distribution of electoral materials, training of ad hoc staff, and deployment of technology aimed at reducing irregularities during the polls.
The assurance comes as political activities intensify in Ekiti State ahead of future electoral contests, with parties already mobilising supporters and strengthening grassroots structures across local government areas.
During the visit, the INEC chairman also met with electoral officials and other stakeholders to assess the commission’s level of preparedness and identify operational challenges requiring urgent attention before election day.
Political parties in the state have repeatedly called on the commission to guarantee transparency, especially in vote collation and transmission processes, following controversies that trailed some previous elections in different parts of Nigeria.
Observers say voter confidence remains a critical issue in Nigeria’s democratic process, with many citizens demanding stronger accountability, improved security, and greater transparency from electoral authorities.
Ekiti State has historically witnessed highly competitive elections due to its politically active population and strategic influence within the South-West region. The state has also gained attention over the years for relatively high voter awareness and participation during major elections.
Security agencies have meanwhile pledged to work with INEC to maintain law and order throughout the electoral period and prevent violence, voter intimidation, or disruption of the process.
Stone Reporters note that INEC’s repeated assurances regarding credible elections come at a time when public scrutiny of electoral institutions remains high across Nigeria, especially following debates over the credibility of recent national and state elections.
