Barely a week after the Ogun State Police Command paraded the leader of a kidnapping syndicate, they have now announced another significant breakthrough, arresting two men of Anambra State extraction over the brutal kidnapping and murder of two Yoruba indigenes in Ogun State. The incident, which residents are calling a well-planned operation, has resulted in the deaths of a 71-year-old man and another 37-year-old man, both indigenes of the state.

According to a police statement released by the command's spokesperson, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the arrest of the two suspects, whose identities have not yet been released, followed an intelligence-driven operation after the bodies of the victims were discovered in a shallow grave in the Ijebu axis of the state. The victims, a 71-year-old man and a 37-year-old man, were reportedly kidnapped before being killed in cold blood in what authorities suspect was a premeditated act.

Babaseyi explained that the suspects, who are currently in custody, have made useful confessions and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation. The police did not, however, disclose the motive for the abduction or the circumstances leading to the murders. The command's swift response, occurring just days after they neutralized a kidnapping kingpin and recovered an AK-47 rifle, N2 million cash, and other valuables in the state, has been commended by locals, though the ethnic dimension of the crime has raised fresh concerns.

The incident has ignited a firestorm of reactions among community leaders and residents. Pan-Yoruba socio-political groups have demanded thorough investigations and stronger border controls, arguing that the involvement of non-Yoruba elements in violent crimes is becoming a disturbing pattern. Sources within the Ogun State Government told reporters that Governor Dapo Abiodun has been briefed on the incident and has ordered the state's security apparatus to clamp down on all criminal activities, regardless of the perpetrator's origin.

However, the Ogun State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and avoid ethnic profiling, emphasizing that crime has no ethnicity and that the suspects will be prosecuted without prejudice. The command also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and called for continuous support from members of the public in providing timely and credible information to security agencies.

As the investigation continues and the state awaits the arraignment of the suspects, families of the victims are left to mourn while the broader Yoruba and Igbo communities watch warily. The Ogun State Government had earlier in November 2025 launched a mass registration of foreign nationals and non-indigenes residing in the state, a policy many believe should have been implemented more vigorously to track the movement of suspicious characters. Fish farmers and residents in the Ijebu axis have repeatedly decried rising insecurity, with many living in perpetual fear.

Despite the police's plea for calm, the killing has further strained inter-ethnic relations in the volatile border state, and many residents are now calling on the government to tighten border controls. While the suspects are in custody, the search for justice has just begun, but for the families of the two men from Ogun State, no amount of justice can bring back their loved ones, whose only mistake was crossing paths with men who had traveled far from the banks of the Niger to shed blood in Yorubaland.
