The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Osun State has extended the service year of 12 corps members and declared 27 others as absconders during the passing-out ceremony for the 2025 Batch 'A' Stream II, the scheme's state coordinator announced on Thursday.

The Osun State Coordinator, Mr. Ekeng Kubiangha, made the announcement during a low-key passing-out exercise held across the state's 30 local government areas and area office. In a statement issued by the scheme's spokesperson, Mrs. Catherine Otemuyiwa, Mr. Kubiangha confirmed that the 27 corps members were declared absconders for allegedly abandoning their national assignments at their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA) without proper authorization. The 12 others had their service year extended due to various offences and acts of indiscipline.

Mr. Kubiangha stated that these disciplinary measures were taken in strict adherence to the NYSC Bye-Laws, which govern the conduct of corps members throughout their service year. "The sanctions were necessary to uphold discipline and preserve the integrity of the national service scheme across the country," he said.

Despite the sanctions, a total of 2,132 corps members successfully completed their mandatory one-year national service and were issued their Certificates of National Service. The coordinator commended the outgoing corps members for their discipline, resilience, and contributions to the development of their host communities.

During the ceremony, Mr. Kubiangha also reminded the passing-out corps members that they were proceeding on a 21-day terminal leave and cautioned them against wearing the NYSC uniform after the expiration of their service year. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding their certificates, advising them to carefully proofread all entries for any discrepancies before laminating the documents.

The NYSC coordinator used the opportunity to advise the outgoing corps members against engaging in partisan politics, especially ahead of the forthcoming elections in the state. He warned that making politically charged statements could expose them to personal danger. He also urged them to focus on self-development and economic independence, describing the NYSC scheme as a "springboard for future success".

The scheme’s leadership has reiterated that it will continue to enforce its bye-laws to maintain discipline. This has become increasingly necessary as the NYSC has previously expressed concerns over a growing trend of service evasion among corps members. Just a day before the passing-out ceremony, the NYSC Director-General had warned corps members against the dangers of absconding from their primary assignments and embarking on 'Japa' (emigration) before completing their national service.
