The body of Mr. Joel Adesiyan, one of the teachers fatally shot during the coordinated terrorist attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State last Friday, is being laid to rest today, May 22, 2026. The burial service began at 11:00 am at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso, with interment to follow at his residence in the Owolake area of the town. Adesiyan, an assistant headmaster at L.A. Primary School, Esiele, was killed at the scene of the abduction, reportedly shot while attempting to escape through a window as armed bandits stormed the premises around 9:30 am on May 15. He was 49 years old, born on December 11, 1976.

The school attack was part of a broader, coordinated assault in which bandits on motorcycles attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, in the Ahoro-Esinele/Yawota axis. During the assault, the assailants abducted a large number of students and staff, including the principal of Community Grammar School, Mrs. Rachael Alamu. Along with Adesiyan, a commercial motorcyclist who resisted attempts to steal his bike was also shot dead. In the chaos following the raid, the attackers made off with Mrs. Alamu’s Toyota Corolla, later setting it ablaze as they retreated into the nearby forest. Days later, a second teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, who was abducted during the same raid, was beheaded; a video of the execution was released by the captors.

Governor Seyi Makinde, who visited the scene and has been managing the crisis, confirmed the abduction of 18 pupils and seven teachers from one of the attacked schools, with the total number of abducted students from all three institutions still unverified. The attack triggered widespread panic across Ogbomoso and surrounding communities, leading many parents to rush to schools to withdraw their children, and forcing some institutions to close temporarily over rumors of further bandit movements.

In response to the incident, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu visited the scene on May 16, deploying additional detectives from Force Headquarters to collaborate with joint security teams in an ongoing rescue operation for the remaining abducted teachers and students. Meanwhile, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) officials, who have mourned Adesiyan’s death while demanding the release of the other captives, are among those expected to attend the funeral. The family has asked for privacy as they lay their loved one to rest, with the burial proceedings taking place against the backdrop of a community still reeling from the shock and a nation demanding answers.
