The All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has been rejected by party stakeholders, who insist that no valid poll was conducted in the area. The group has dismissed any purported results emerging from the Toto/Gadabuke State Assembly constituency contest as fraudulent, throwing the party's preparations for the 2027 elections into fresh turmoil.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 22, 2026, a coalition of APC stakeholders in Toto LGA declared that the much‑publicised House of Assembly primary for the constituency did not take place. According to the group, party members and delegates waited in vain at designated polling units across the local government area, only to be told that election materials had not been delivered and that no accredited officials were present to conduct the exercise. “Our members were ready and willing to exercise their democratic rights, but there was no voting, no accreditation, no collation – nothing,” a community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity told Stone Reporters News. “Any result being circulated for Toto LGA is a complete fabrication.”
The stakeholders’ rejection follows a similar pattern of discontent that has surfaced in other Nasarawa constituencies. On May 21, the member representing Eggon East Constituency, Hon. Jacob Ajegena Kudu, had already rejected the APC’s failure to conduct a primary in his area, describing the development as a violation of democratic principles and internal party processes. Addressing journalists in Lafia, Kudu stated that party members and stakeholders had gathered peacefully on the scheduled date for the exercise, but the election was never held, with election materials allegedly carted away by the local government chairman. That same week, controversy had also erupted over the APC House of Assembly primary in Nasarawa Eggon West, where electoral materials were reportedly hijacked by sponsored hoodlums before voting could commence.
The crisis in Toto carries additional weight because of its timing. The House of Assembly primaries were part of a nationwide exercise that saw the APC elect candidates for state legislative seats across Nigeria. The party’s inability to conduct a credible primary in a key constituency such as Toto/Gadabuke – a traditional APC stronghold – points to deeper organisational and logistical failures that could harm its chances of retaining the seat. The current stalemate was foreshadowed only a day earlier, when the immediate past Executive Chairman of Toto LGA, Hon. Aliyu Abdullahi Tashas, announced his withdrawal from the race, citing “insincerity, hypocrisy and selfishness” among some political leaders and government officials from the LGA. Tashas warned that the party was heading for “high‑level political mistakes” that could lead to its downfall.
The stakeholders have issued a clear demand: the immediate conduct of a fresh, transparent and supervised primary in Toto LGA. They have also called on the APC National Working Committee to intervene, dissolve the state and local government electoral committees, and order a new election that is open to all registered party members. “We will not accept any result that is cooked up in a backroom,” a stakeholder representative said. “Our people are watching, and we will not be silenced.” As of press time, the APC had not issued an official response, and no official result for the Toto/Gadabuke primary had been released. The party’s National Working Committee is expected to review the conduct of primaries nationwide, and the Toto issue is likely to be on the agenda.
