The Nigerian military has rescued 92 civilians who were abducted by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday, May 23, 2026. Troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion deployed at Dutse Kura detected suspicious movement through surveillance systems at approximately 11:22 am, observing terrorists forcefully herding civilians and vehicles off the road into nearby bushes. The unit immediately activated its Quick Reaction Force, while reinforcements from the 27 Task Force Brigade Garrison were simultaneously mobilized to join the rescue mission.

Converging on the terrorists towards the Mangari–Dora general area, the troops engaged the insurgents in a fierce encounter, forcing them to abandon their captives and flee in disarray. According to Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, all 92 kidnapped victims — comprising 52 males, 33 females and seven children — along with eight vehicles were successfully recovered. As the troops pressed their advantage, the fleeing terrorists attempted to slow the advance by planting three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Bula Zarma–Mangari axis. However, the unit’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded with precision and successfully detonated all three devices, clearing the route for continued pursuit.

The military recorded zero personnel or equipment casualties throughout the operation. The rescued civilians were provided with welfare support and escorted by troops to Damaturu, where they were released to continue their journey. The operation stands as a demonstration of the operational readiness and surveillance capability of Operation Hadin Kai, reinforcing the military’s commitment to protecting civilians and denying terrorists freedom of action in the North‑East.
