The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the brutal murder of Blessing Moshood, a 29-year-old Sociology graduate of Kogi State University, whose half-naked body was found dumped inside a canal in the Jikwoyi area of Abuja last Thursday night, May 21, 2026. The discovery has thrown the quiet suburb into shock and left the victim’s family devastated, as police struggle to piece together the last hours of a young woman who, according to her sister, left home after a cryptic phone call and never returned.
Abigail Moshood, the deceased’s sister, told police and journalists that Blessing left their residence around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday after speaking with an unidentified person on the phone. About an hour later, the deceased called back to say she was coming home briefly to pick up a phone charger she had forgotten. That was the last time the family heard her voice. When Blessing failed to return home that night and could not be reached the following day, the family’s concern quickly turned to dread. Their worst fears were realised when neighbours began talking about a woman’s corpse that had been discovered inside a canal in Jikwoyi. Someone described the hairstyle of the victim – and it matched Blessing’s.
Police officers from the Jikwoyi Police Station evacuated the body to a mortuary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State. Abigail said the corpse was found half-naked, wearing only a top. When she visited the police station to inquire, officers showed her photographs of the recovered body, confirming without doubt that it was her sister. “My mother started crying,” Abigail recounted. Neighbours described Blessing as a bright, warm and approachable young woman. Margaret, a neighbour, told reporters that Blessing had graduated with a Second Class Upper degree in Sociology and was noted for her impeccable command of English. “She was also very friendly in this neighbourhood and will be greatly missed by all of us, especially the children who have been crying since they learnt of her death,” Margaret said. Another neighbour, Abdullahi Musa, appealed to the police to deploy crack detectives to areas around Jikwoyi Medical Centre to tackle phone‑snatching and related crimes.
The FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. “The Command is pursuing all leads connected to the case, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the alleged murder,” she said. A police officer at the Jikwoyi station, who spoke on condition of anonymity, assured the family that detectives had commenced a thorough probe. No arrests have been reported, and the identity of the person Blessing spoke to on the phone before she left home remains unknown.
