A fatal road accident along the New Mile 3 axis of the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway has claimed the lives of two persons, including a female police officer, and left two others injured, prompting the Federal Road Safety Corps to issue a fresh warning to motorists against route violations and dangerous driving. The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Gombe State, Samson Kaura, while confirming the incident on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, attributed the crash to a trailer driver who violated traffic regulations by using a one‑way access to enter a filling station before the vehicle suffered brake failure and lost control.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, and involved a DAF truck with registration number XH 122 GME, three motorcycles, several pedestrians and roadside shops. According to preliminary findings by Arewa PUNCH, the truck driver had reportedly attempted to enter the AA Rano Filling Station through a prohibited one‑way lane when the vehicle’s braking system failed completely, causing the heavily loaded truck to veer off and ram into motorcycles, pedestrians and nearby shops along the busy highway corridor. “It was caused by a trailer who took fuel at Rano filling station. Instead of taking the right route, he did route violation. He lost control,” Kaura told newsmen.
The Gombe State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed that the two deceased persons were Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Command, and an unidentified male pedestrian. “As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina attached to Communications department, Gombe State Command, and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives, while two other persons, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment,” the police spokesperson said. The command added that the crash also damaged three motorcycles and some nearby shops.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Samson Kaura, used the incident to renew his call for strict adherence to traffic regulations, proper vehicle maintenance, and responsible driving practices. “Take the right lane to prevent accidents. People should obey regulations. We should organise our journey in such a way that we can take our time to comply with route regulation,” he said. Kaura specifically warned drivers of heavy‑duty vehicles against the dangerous practice of using one‑way lanes to access fuel stations, noting that such manoeuvres increase the risk of brake failure and loss of control, especially when vehicles are fully loaded.
The Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, Umar Chuso, also weighed in on the tragedy, echoing the FRSC’s call for greater discipline on the roads. CP Chuso warned motorists against all forms of traffic violations and stressed the need for proper vehicle maintenance, particularly for commercial and heavy‑duty vehicles that ply the highways daily. He reassured residents that the command would continue to enforce traffic laws and prosecute offenders in order to reduce the frequency of avoidable road tragedies.
The police investigation revealed that the truck driver, who was among the injured, would be prosecuted once he is discharged from medical care. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver ignored clear road signage and drove against traffic to access the filling station, a decision that set in motion a chain of events leading to the fatal crash. The incident has also raised fresh concerns among commuters and market traders who use the New Mile 3 axis, a known commercial hub where heavy trucks frequently manoeuvre in and out of fuel stations and warehouses, often creating hazardous traffic conditions.
The two bodies have since been deposited in a morgue, while the injured persons, including the driver, are receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. The FRSC has urged motorists to avoid driving against traffic, to always conduct pre‑trip vehicle inspections, and to prioritise safety over convenience. The Gombe State Government has not issued an official statement on the crash, but the FRSC has assured the public that it will continue its awareness campaigns to reduce the rising toll of road fatalities in the state.
