Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has emerged as the winner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election in Bayelsa State, securing a commanding victory over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and economist Mohammed Hayatu‑Deen. The result, announced on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, at the ADC collation centre in Yenagoa, showed Amaechi polling 44,404 votes, while Atiku came a distant second with 6,570 votes. Hayatu‑Deen finished third with 939 votes. The primary was conducted on Monday, 25 May, across the eight local government areas and all 105 wards of the state under a direct voting system, with a total of 56,356 registered voters. Of these, 53,298 were accredited, 51,913 votes were declared valid, and 1,785 votes were rejected.
The Chairman of the ADC Presidential Primaries Committee and Returning Officer for Bayelsa State, retired Commodore Promise Dappa, announced the result at the collation centre, flanked by committee members and party leaders. “By the powers conferred on me as the Chairman of the presidential primary election in Bayelsa State and also the Returning Officer of the Presidential Primary election in the state, I hereby do declare Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as the winner of the ADC Presidential Primary election in Bayelsa State, having polled the highest number of votes in the state,” Dappa declared. The result was also confirmed in a statement shared by the ADC on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday.
The Bayelsa outcome forms part of the ongoing nationwide ADC presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party has adopted a direct primary method, allowing registered members to vote for their preferred candidate across the country’s 8,809 wards. While early results from several states show Atiku Abubakar maintaining a national lead, Amaechi’s decisive victory in Bayelsa has added a new layer of competition to the contest. Atiku had earlier been declared winner in states including Gombe, Abia, Ebonyi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, and Osun. In Gombe, he polled 139,334 votes against Amaechi’s 1,150; in Ebonyi, he secured 15,300 votes to Amaechi’s 2,200; and in Sokoto, he garnered 68,823 votes while Amaechi recorded 292.
Hayatu‑Deen, who had earlier announced that he would not participate in the next stage of the exercise over alleged irregularities, did not attend the result announcement. The ADC National Working Committee has yet to formally announce the final collated results from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, but party officials have assured that the process remains transparent and that the overall winner would be declared once collation is completed. Political observers say the outcome of the ADC primary could shape opposition coalition talks ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the ADC emerging as a potential platform for a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
