Cross River Police Arrest Suspect for Allegedly Stabbing TRAMA Official to Death During Traffic Enforcement

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 54-year-old man, Godwin Okoko, in connection with the alleged murder of an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA) during a traffic enforcement operation in the Marian Hill area of Calabar. The incident occurred on Monday, May 25, 2026, at about 9:45 a.m., following a distress report received by the Command that TRAMA officials carrying out lawful traffic enforcement duties were allegedly attacked during an operation involving a commercial mini-bus driver suspected to have violated traffic regulations.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, preliminary investigations revealed that three TRAMA officials sustained injuries during the attack. One of the officials allegedly sustained a severe chest injury after being stabbed with a screwdriver and was immediately rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel. The two other injured officials are currently receiving medical treatment and responding positively. Upon receipt of the distress report, police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The suspect is currently in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, while investigation continues to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The Cross River State Police Command strongly condemned acts of violence against public officers and individuals carrying out lawful responsibilities and assured residents that justice will be pursued diligently and in accordance with the law. The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and law‑abiding, and to cooperate with security agencies in their ongoing efforts to maintain public safety.
