The Lagos State Police Command has neutralised four suspected kidnappers who had spent four days in Lagos planning to abduct a prominent businessman in the Ejigbo area, Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai has revealed. The operation, which took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at about 9:30 p.m. at Jakande Estate Gate in Ejigbo, followed credible intelligence that a notorious kidnapping syndicate was preparing to strike. Fatai disclosed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, where he presented the command’s operational scorecard for the month.
According to the commissioner, the four neutralised suspects had been lodged in Lagos for four days, meticulously planning the operation before police intervention. “The gang specialised in targeting wealthy businessmen and usually entered Lagos to carry out attacks on unsuspecting victims,” Fatai told journalists. He added that additional intelligence linked the gang leader, identified as Ifeanyi, also known as “Ifeko,” to the training of one Henry Asoona, who was the leader of a kidnap gang neutralised at the Ladipo International Spare Parts Market in 2024. Fatai disclosed that Ifeanyi, who is reportedly based abroad, had returned to Lagos alongside gang members from the South‑East to coordinate the planned operation.
When police operatives moved in, the suspects opened fire, leading to a fierce gun duel. “The operatives responded with superior firepower, leading to the neutralisation of four members of the gang, while one suspect escaped with bullet wounds,” Fatai stated. An inspector of police sustained a gunshot injury on his left leg during the exchange and was rushed to the hospital, where he is responding to treatment. Recovered from the scene included one Toyota Sienna vehicle, one AK‑47 rifle with two magazines and 25 rounds of live ammunition, one Submachine Gun rifle with one magazine loaded with 12 rounds of live ammunition, a Toyota Corolla key, and a Lexus vehicle key.
Fatai assured that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and other accomplices, and warned criminals planning to operate in Lagos that the command is fully committed to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention. He appealed to residents to continue providing timely information to the police through the command’s emergency contact numbers.
