The businessman and socialite known as Cubana Chief Priest has fired back at critics of his support for President Bola Tinubu, arguing that most Nigerians who attack the president online do not even know the chairman of their own local government area. Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, made the remarks during a media interview on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, days after the conclusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries. He insisted that his loyalty to the president remains unshaken, irrespective of the outcome of his own quest for a legislative ticket.
Okechukwu said the widespread criticism of President Tinubu on social media often comes from individuals who are disconnected from grassroots political reality. He argued that many of those who attack the president cannot identify the chairman of their local government area, let alone participate meaningfully in the political process that determines who governs them. “Many of the people who are busy abusing Tinubu on social media, if you ask them for the name of their LGA chairman, they cannot tell you. They don’t even know who is their councillor,” he said during the interview. He urged young Nigerians to move beyond online commentary and get actively involved in politics at the local level, register as party members, participate in primaries, and understand how candidates emerge.
The socialite maintained that his decision to back President Tinubu was a strategic choice based on electoral realities, not a betrayal of ethnic sentiment. He stated that he had previously supported former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, but that experience taught him that winning elections requires a strong political structure and not just social media popularity. “I supported Peter Obi last time and I lost. I am tired of losing. Politics is about winning and if you want to win, you have to go where the structure is,” he said.
Okechukwu, who serves as the Imo State Coordinator of the Pro‑Tinubu City Boys Movement, also spoke about his experience during the APC House of Representatives primary for the Orsu/Orlu/Oru East Federal Constituency. He clarified that he never actually participated in the primary, contrary to widespread reports that he had lost the contest. According to him, he stepped down after consultations with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who explained the party’s zoning arrangement and pointed out that it was not yet the turn of his local government area to produce the federal lawmaker. The socialite said he respected the party’s decision and chose not to proceed to the field, a move he described as a sign of loyalty and political maturity rather than a defeat.
His comments have drawn mixed reactions on social media. While some users praised his pragmatic approach to politics, others accused him of opportunism and questioned his sudden switch of allegiance from Peter Obi to President Tinubu. One commenter wrote, “He said he wants to help Tinubu get millions of votes in the South‑East, but he couldn’t even get enough votes to win his own primary.” Another user argued that his stance reflected the harsh realities of Nigerian politics, where access to power and resources often determines electoral outcomes. Despite the backlash, Okechukwu has remained defiant, urging his followers to focus on building political networks rather than wasting time on online fights that do not translate into electoral victories.
