Armed robbers armed with guns, knives, and cutlasses invaded the female hostel of the Numan Campus of the Adamawa State Polytechnic in the early hours of Wednesday, 27 May 2026, carting away no fewer than 15 mobile phones and other valuables from terrified students. Witnesses said some students who resisted attempts to steal their phones were injured, while one student fainted from the trauma of the attack. The incident occurred as Muslims were preparing for Sallah celebrations, a period when security is often stretched thin.

According to students who spoke to reporters on Thursday, 28 May 2026, the robbers broke into the hostel in the dead of night and systematically moved from room to room, threatening occupants with weapons and demanding they hand over their phones and cash. Some students attempted to resist but were overpowered and injured by the assailants. One student collapsed from shock and had to be revived by colleagues after the attackers fled. The victims accused the school authorities of negligence and poor security on the campus, pointing out that the hostel had no functional security gate and that there were no patrols at the time of the attack.

The Numan Campus is the second largest campus of the Adamawa State Polytechnic, after the main campus located in the Jimeta metropolis of Yola. The institution has faced security challenges in the past, but the brazen nature of this attack has heightened fears among students and staff. The Information Officer of the polytechnic, Mr Albert Matila, confirmed the incident, assuring that the management would visit the affected female hostel to assess the situation and take necessary action. He did not provide details on whether any arrests had been made or if security measures would be upgraded.

As of the time of this report, the police had not issued a statement on the robbery. The students have called on the state government and the polytechnic management to beef up security around the campus, especially at the Numan Campus, which is located in a remote area. They also demanded a compensation for the stolen items and medical attention for the injured.

The attack has sparked outrage among the student community, with some threatening to shut down the campus if the authorities fail to act swiftly. The Adamawa State Government has yet to comment on the incident. The robbery highlights the growing insecurity in the North‑East region, where banditry and armed robbery have become rampant, even in educational institutions. For the students of Adamawa State Polytechnic, the hope is that the management will take immediate steps to prevent a recurrence of such a traumatic experience.
