A firestorm of outrage has engulfed the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State after a viral video surfaced showing the party’s newly nominated chairmanship candidate for Nkanu East Local Government Area, Engr. Mike Ogbuekwe, physically assaulting a woman believed to be his wife. The footage, which emerged on social media on Thursday, May 28, 2026, captures Ogbuekwe in a domestic altercation where he repeatedly strikes and manhandles the visibly distressed woman. He also seized her mobile phone and handed it to one of several men in the room, while she shouted that she had been beaten by five men invited by the husband for that purpose. Ogbuekwe, wearing a torn top and shorts, is seen parking a luxury Jeep and a Toyota Hilux at the residence, further underscoring his status and wealth.
The video, first published by Galaxy Television, shows the woman protesting being filmed. Ogbuekwe, who had ordered the recording, appears undeterred. In the clip, the woman cries out for help, but the assault continues. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with users calling for the withdrawal of his nomination and for law enforcement to take action. The video has been shared thousands of times across platforms, with many demanding answers from the APC, the Enugu State Government, and the police.
Ogbuekwe was officially presented with a Certificate of Return by the APC state chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the party’s state secretariat in Enugu. The primary election had been described by the party as “peaceful and successful.” Ogbuekwe had emerged as the party’s flag bearer for the September 26, 2026, local government elections after the incumbent, Sydney Edeh, completed his constitutional two-term tenure and did not stand for re‑election. The nomination was part of a list of 17 candidates elected to fly the party’s flag in the upcoming council polls.
Following the circulation of the video, calls for Ogbuekwe’s disqualification have intensified. Women’s rights groups and civil society organisations have denounced the act and urged the APC leadership to withdraw his nomination. The National Human Rights Commission and domestic violence advocacy groups have also taken note of the incident, warning that any further delay in taking action would normalise violence against women in the political space. The Enugu State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement confirming the arrest of the suspect. However, sources told Stone Reporters News that Ogbuekwe has gone into hiding since the video went viral and that security operatives are working to locate him.
As of press time, the APC Enugu State chapter has not officially responded to the allegations or indicated whether it will revoke Ogbuekwe’s nomination. The party’s national leadership in Abuja has remained silent. The development poses a major credibility test for the APC, which is trying to regain political ground in Enugu State. With the local government elections barely four months away, the party now faces a difficult decision: retain its candidate and weather the public backlash, or replace him and risk a last‑minute legal and administrative dispute.
The case has ignited a broader conversation about the character and conduct of political aspirants, and whether Nigeria’s political parties conduct any meaningful background checks on the individuals they put forward for public office. For the woman at the centre of the video, the ordeal has left her traumatized and seeking refuge with family members. Her voice on the clip – “I was beaten by five men invited by the husband for that purpose” – has become a chilling testament to the horror of domestic violence.
